2022 Recruiting: Spanish prospect Baba Miller commits to Florida State

What was once a surefire Gonzaga pick changed when the scholarship situation moved.

2022 Spanish prospect Baba Miller has committed to Florida State. He was choosing between the Seminoles and the Zags.

Miller, a 6’10 lanky forward and native of Mallorca Spain, has played with Real Madrid’s U-18 team, and with a 7-foot-plus wingspan has a lot of potential to be one of the next big international prospects in college hoops.

Gonzaga made its name in the foreign waters well before a lot of other college programs and holds a long list of talented collegiate players, stretching from Ronny Turiaf to Rui Hachimura, and plenty between. Former Gonzaga assistant coach Tommy Lloyd, now the current head coach of Arizona, was one of the big international talent scouts, and there was some concern amongst the fanbase that that aspect of the program would completely dry up.

Although the Zags didn’t land Miller, they were largely considered the favorites until the last week, when Rasir Bolton, Drew Timme, and Julian Strawther all returned, alongside Malachi Smith transferring, the Zags ran out of scholarships. Although some message boards and Twitter posters hypothesized that NIL would change and somehow a scholarship would magically appear, that was not the case.

That said, the fact that the Zags were this far in on an international prospect, arguably the best one in the class, bodes well for the future of the Zags international searches.
