Ballo arrived at Gonzaga with the promising nickname of Baby Shaq. In his redshirt freshman season, he averaged 6.3 minutes per game in 24 appearances, but struggled on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Although the can’t teach seven feet mentality applied to Ballo, he often struggled to corral the quick passes from Gonzaga guards into the post and was generally ineffective in his limited time.
Ballo is the second player to transfer from the Bulldogs, following Pavel Zakharov. Reading way too much in between the lines, Ballos departure could potentially signify a departure of Tommy Lloyd to Arizona, or the impending arrival of UNC transfer Walker Kessler. Either way, Ballo was going to need to show vast improvement next season to warrant minutes on any collegiate basketball team.
It was short, and it was sweet, but all the best to Baby Shaq. Hopefully, we see him breaking backboards soon.
