Gonzaga Receives 5 Seed in NCAA Tournament

Ties a program best

David Becker

Fresh off their dramatic WCC Tournament Championship, the Gonzaga women were tabbed as a five seed in the NCAA’s Selection Show on Monday. It ties the best seeding in program history, set in 2019 when they defeated 12-seed Little Rock before falling to 4-seed Oregon State.

They’ll open up their tournament run against 12 seed Belmont. The Bruins won the OVC Tournament and enter the game with a 20-5 record. They shoot a ton of threes. With a win, Gonzaga is looking at a four seed of Indiana and a potential Sweet 16 showdown with top seeded NC State. Gonzaga has not made the second weekend since 2015.

Lisa Fortier’s crew enters the tournament with a 23-3 record. Their three losses came to number one seed South Carolina, number nine seed South Dakota State, and a road loss to BYU, who was one of the last few teams in the tournament. The Cougars were 0.6 seconds away from clinching a spot the Big Dance before Jill Townsend’s buzzer beater in the WCC Title game. It was quite the sweat over the last six days, but BYU rightfully got in as an 11 seed.

Down the road, the Washington State Cougars made their first tournament in 30 years and are a nine seed in Gonzaga’s region. The entire women’s tournament is taking place in the San Antonio area. Gonzaga will play at 1 pm on Monday on ESPN2.
