Gonzaga was a little upset after losing their first WCC game of the season on Thursday, ending their 17-game winning streak. They took out their frustrations on the third-place San Diego Toreros on Saturday afternoon. Three Bulldogs finished in double figures as Gonzaga picked up a 69-47 victory.
After perhaps her worst offensive game of the season on Thursday against BYU, Jill Townsend came out on fire Saturday. The senior wing scored 12 first quarter points, outscoring USD by herself, as the Zags took a 23-10 lead after the first 10 minutes. The game would never get any closer.
Townsend would finish the day with a team-high 16 points. Kayleigh Truong continued her stretch of good play, pouring in 13 points with three 3-pointers. Melody Kempton added 10 points off the bench and Jenn Wirth brought in 12 rebounds.
San Diego, who entered the game 9-3 in the WCC, averages just under 67 points a game. Gonzaga’s defense held them to a paltry 27.5 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers. Lisa Fortier’s group has not lost back-to-back games in over four years.
Gonzaga heads back to Spokane to host Pepperdine on Thursday. At 19-3 overall, they are one win away from another 20-win season. They also need just one win in their final two games to clinch another regular season WCC Championship.
