Senior point guard Andrew Nembhard was named to the Bob Cousy Award Watch List, which is a rite of passage for essentially every starting point guard that has worn the Gonzaga jersey since the award was created at the start of the 2003-04 season.
While the list of Gonzaga floor generals who have been named to the watch list is long, incredibly, no Zag has been able to lock down this award at the end of the season. Nembhard is the next in line to give it a go, and his chances of taking it home by season’s end is as good as anyone that has come before him.
With the weapons around him on Gonzaga’s roster and a system of play that suits his abilities to a tee, it’s reasonable to expect the senior’s name to remain on the list all the way to the end of the season as it gets pared down in the months to come.
Of course, each of the other 19 athletes named to the list are great point guards in their own right, so the competition will be tight. Some notables include Villanova’s super senior Collin Gillespie and tournament darling Max Abmas. Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu took the award last year after leading Illinois to a 1-seed and before getting drafted by his hometown Chicago Bulls.
Here’s what the entire watch list looks like:
Cousy Award Watch List
|Antoine Davis||Detroit Mercy||Senior|
|DeVante' Jones||Michigan||Grad Student|
|Caleb Love||North Carolina||Sophomore|
|Max Abmas||Oral Roberts||Junior|
|Kyle Lofton||St. Bonaventure||Senior|

This will be a fun one to keep an eye on over the course of the year.
