Quite a few of us had circled Saturday afternoon for the big game between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the WCC. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 related protocols within the BYU Cougar’s program, the Zags will now be travelling to Portland to play their second game of the season.
Portland, like Gonzaga, was originally scheduled to play both San Diego and BYU this week. With both weeks opening up, the conference is opting for flexibility where it can. Gonzaga and Portland were set to play at Portland on Feb. 6, the only game of the week for both teams.
It is a bummer, of course, because with Gonzaga rolling against the WCC at the moment, a contest against the talent of BYU was going to be a fun watch. Portland, at 4-2 in conference, should still be a good game. Portland struggled to get any offense going in a 75-43 loss to Gonzaga earlier this year.
How the WCC will reschedule the Gonzaga games against BYU and San Diego remains to be seen. Gonzaga now has a week break in its schedule, and BYU is slated to play Pepperdine on Feb. 4 and LMU on Feb. 6.
