The Gonzaga Bulldogs held the Saint Mary’s Gaels to just 31.1 percent from the floor in a 69-37 rout on Saturday afternoon.
Jenn Wirth led the Zags with 11 points and LeeAnne Wirth added in 10 more points. It wasn’t too high of a point total for the leading scorers, but considering that a total of 12 Zags scored points in the game, the love was more than definitely shared.
The Zags opened up the game with an 11-0 run that set the tone for something the Gaels could never recover. The Zags took a 12-4 lead into the first quarter and kept pace throughout the first half, going into halftime leading 30-16.
The defensive showcase occurred again in the third quarter, with the Zags outscoring the Gaels 24-9. Gonzaga bullied the Gaels with their height advantage, outrebounding Saint Mary’s 41-23. They grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, turning that into 13 second chance points. They used their defense to create the offense, scoring 18 points off of 15 turnovers.
The Zags continue their slightly wonky start of conference schedule with a game versus the Pacific Tigers in Spokane, on Monday, followed by a contest at home against the University fo Portland on Saturday. After that, the Zags will return to the regularly scheduled Thurs/Sat programming.
