The Gonzaga Bulldogs women’s basketball team fell one spot in the latest AP Top 25 poll to No. 12 in the nation.
Northwestern rose three spots from No. 14, jumping up above the Zags to claim the No. 11 spot. It is a tight race, with only three spots separating the two schools.
Either way, it is a good example of the bias that exists towards the smaller schools in the realm of national voters. Certainly, the Bulldogs didn’t have a strong week (they played one game, a win over the Portland Pilots), but it isn’t like Northwestern dropped a couple of powerhouses.
In moving up three spots, the Wildcats defeated Ohio State on the road (a good team: 10-7 in conference) and Illinois at home. Illinois, for the record, is currently 2-16 in conference play.
So it might just be a minor quibble, and yes, the rankings don’t mean anything, however, the Zags are (or at least were) on the edge of cracking into the top 10 for the first time in school history. Now, it looks like that’ll have to wait for a bit.
Here is the AP top 25 for Week 18.
