Tying the highest-mark in school history, with an asterisk.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs will close out the season as the No. 2 team in the country as the final AP Poll was released today. This ties the school-record for highest ranking in the final poll, but it will need to come with an asterisk this season.

The last time the Zags finished No. 2 in the polls was the 2017 season, as the runner-ups in the national championship game, the Zags were technically the No. 2 team in the nation. This year, the Zags were merely the No. 2 team in the nation heading into the NCAA Tournament. With the NCAA Tournament cancelled due to COVID-19, the Zags, who won the WCC Tournament Championship, stayed the No. 2 team in the nation.

Either way, hats off to the men’s squad this season. The team lost 80 percent of their minutes from last season, started the season with the highest ranking in school history, pretty much lived up to the standard all season long, and closed it out as a No. 1 seed and a possible Final Four favorite. What a weird year.
