Katie Campbell and LeeAnne Wirth each scored 14 points and the Gonzaga Bulldogs’ held the Saint Mary’s Gaels to 25 percent from the floor in another defensive marvel, 74-49.
Four Zags scored in double-digits in the game, and with the offense humming, the Gonzaga defense did the rest. Saint Mary’s, one of the better three-point shooting teams in the nation, only managed 4-of-22 from three-point range, essentially burying whatever chances they might have had in pulling off the upset.
The defense was on full display in the second quarter. Saint Mary’s opened up the quarter with a couple of free throws and then proceeded to miss literally every other shot for the entire 10 minutes. Gonzaga outscored Saint Mary’s 18-2 in the second quarter to take a 41-12 lead into halftime. Jenn Wirth helped power the Zags with a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Zags’ forced 17 Saint Mary’s turnovers and sent the Gaels packing to another loss. The Zags, firmly established as the cream of the crop for the WCC, next take on the Pacific Tigers on Saturday.
