Thornton visited both schools, and had been rumored to be a strong Gonzaga lean since he left campus. The announcement today came as a little bit of a shock. Thornton isn’t a great scorer, but his defense and ball handling would have fit in well with this roster.
Without Thornton, we’ll see where Gonzaga goes next. If they don’t pick up any graduate transfer, that leaves Admon Gilder, Brock Ravet, Joel Ayayi, and Corey Kispert as the only players capable of playing the two guard spots. That’s not the end of the world, obviously, but it requires a big jump from Ayayi and heavy minutes right away from Ravet as a freshman.
The current crop of grad transfer guards is pretty thin. There are always a few late transfers that decide to cram their final semester of school into the Summer and then make the leap, ala Geno Crandall. There’s a possibility that a couple players can transfer if they went through the combine, but don’t get selected this Thursday during the NBA draft. But for now, it looks like it’s the Brock Ravet show.
