The No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers will face off against the No. 3 Texas Tech Red Raiders in the NCAA Championship on Monday night.
Texas Tech has looked like one of the best squads on its way to the championship, defeating No. 14 Northern Kentucky, 72-57; No. 6 Buffalo, 78-58; No. 2 Michigan, 63-44; No. 1 Gonzaga, 75-69; and No. 2 Michigan State, 61-51. The top-rated KenPom defense has been everything it was made out to be.
Things haven’t been as simple for Virginia to make it, but it is still quite the story considering the state of Cavaliers basketball last March. Virginia beat No. 16 Gardner-Webb, 71-56; No. 9 Oklahoma, 63-51; No. 12 Oregon, 53-49; No. 3 Purdue, 80-75; and No. 5 Auburn, 63-62.
Tonight, we will see the aggressive Red Raiders defense face off against one of the most deliberately slow offense in the country. They say that defense wins championships? That very well could be the point tonight.
