The 6’7 Strawther is ranked No. 37 by 247 Sports and is the second-best recruit coming out of the fine state of Nevada. He is the highest-ranked recruit to come to Gonzaga since Zach Collins, who was ranked No. 30 by the end of his high school career.
In the end, he was wooed by the community and overall feel of the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
Strawther said the final call came down to comfort, family atmosphere and which school presented the right situation for him.
“The biggest thing was really making the right decision for me and not letting too much of what everyone else has to say affect my decision. So just trusting myself and choosing the spot where I think it’s going to be the best for me.”
The Zags beat out the likes of UNLV, Washington, Florida, and Florida State for Strawther’s services, and shows the Gonzaga Bulldogs’ coaching staff can compete for the higher ranked prospects.
Perhaps even more important, however, is the bond Strawther has with two other players, specifically 2020 Gonzaga recruit Dominick Harris and 2020 target Jalen Suggs. Strawther and Suggs both visited Gonzaga during their demolition of Saint Mary’s at home, and the three players have constantly toyed about playing together on social media. Suggs is a five-star guard ranked No. 10 in the class of 2020. He is also deciding between playing basketball and football. Most importantly, he enjoyed his time at The Kennel.
“I went on a couple for football to Notre Dame and Alabama. For basketball I went to Gonzaga for an official. I loved it. The coaching staff was great. I have a great relationship with the coaching staff. We talk almost every day. The Kennel is amazing. Sold out. Students go crazy and they have a lot of fan support. I loved my time in Spokane. I really enjoyed it and couldn’t find any negatives about it.”
After the stellar class of 2019, the highest rated recruiting class in school history, the start of the 2020 class is looking mighty fine. It might be getting even better in the near future. Welcome to the family Julian Strawther. We hope you enjoy your time in a Gonzaga uniform.
