No one can count out the No. 8 Pepperdine Waves quite yet as Colbey Ross poured on 26 points to help fuel a big upset over the No. 4 San Francisco Dons, 89-72.
San Francisco’s once story book year came to a crashing halt, as the Dons lost their final four-straight games to close out the season. It was always going to be an uphill climb, but San Francisco couldn’t have imagined going out like this. Pepperdine drilled 14 threes in the win to earn the right to face Gonzaga in the semifinals on Monday.
For Zag fans, this isn’t exactly a good thing. Gonzaga is the heavy favorite, but another game against Pepperdine does little to zero for the overall resume of the Zags. It wasn’t much, but at least facing off against San Francisco would have offered another Quadrant II win.
On the other side of the bracket, Isaiah Pineiro scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the San Diego Toreros upset the BYU Cougars, 80-57. San Diego absolutely demolished BYU by half time, leading 46-19.
Saint Mary’s handled San Diego pretty easily in both contests this season, so most likely, we are looking at another Gonzaga/Saint Mary’s championship. San Diego has looked fantastic in the WCC Tournament so far, holding its opponents to 47, 45, and 57 points.
