Bi-Weekly Roundup of Zags in the NBA and Overseas

JW3 Got the Call from the Big Leagues

The NBA has been on a break due to all-star weekend. I have a strong feeling we will see one of these Gonzaga players (Big Domas) playing on Sunday in a couple of years.

February 8 - February 21

Domantas Sabonis, Indiana Pacers: 14.1 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 2.7 APG through 56 games

The Pacers (38-20) sit at the top-half of the Eastern Conference standings in 3rd place. Unfortunately, I really only see the Raptors or the 76ers coming out as champions of the East. With Victor Oladipo out for the season, Indiana lacks a true star that could lead the Pacers through the playoffs.

Next Game - Pelicans @ Pacers on Friday, February 22 @ 7:00 PM ET

Zach Collins, Portland Trail Blazers: 6.8 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 0.8 BPG through 57 games

The Blazers (35-23) are in 4th place in the Western Conference but you know Portland. They will be lucky to get out of the first round as they didn’t make any major moves in the offseason or before the trade deadline (Besides Enes Kanter and Rodney Hood but that isn’t enough to win a series in the wild, wild west).

Next Game - Trail Blazers @ 76ers on Saturday, February 23rd @ 1:00 PM ET

Kelly Olynyk, Miami Heat: 9.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 1.7 APG through 53 games

Kelly and the Heat (26-31) are a 12 game back of the Detroit Pistons for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. No margin for error the rest of the way for Miami. I believe Blake Griffin and the rest of the Bad Boys will keep that final spot with the way they have been playing recently.

Next Game - Pistons @ Heat on Saturday, February 23rd @ 7:30 PM ET

Johnathan Williams, Los Angeles Lakers: 3.3 PPG, 3.0 RPG through 7 games

JW3 got another call up to play with LeBron and the Lakers yesterday. Williams logged 0 minutes in a 111-106 win over the Rockets. The last time Johnathan played in a NBA game was on December 30th against the Kings (4 minutes).

LAL (29-29) could use all the help they can get with a disappointing 10th place after the all-star break. They are right behind a couple Pacific Division foes, the Sacramento Kings (30-28) and Los Angeles Clippers (32-27). It should be yet another tight finish for the 8th and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Next Game - Lakers @ Pelicans on Saturday, February 23rd @ 7:00 PM ET

Nigel Williams-Goss (Greece, Olympiacos): 9.9 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 4.2 APG through 37 games

David Stockton (Germany, Medi Bayreuth): 8.5 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 3.6 APG through 32 games

Kevin Pangos ( Spain, FC Barcelona Lassa): 8.4 PPG, 1.4 RPG, 3.3 APG through 46 games

Kyle Wiltjer (Spain, Unicaja Malaga): 11.1 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 1.1 APG through 37 games

Wiltjer is representing his home country of Canada in the FIBA World Cup Americas’ Qualifiers. He improved his nation to a 9-2 record in World Cup qualifying after taking down Chile. Kyle finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds in the win.
