College Basketball Rankings: Gonzaga Stays at No. 1

The Ohio State loss sealed the deal.

NCAA Basketball: Gonzaga at Washington Lindsey Wasson-USA TODAY Sports

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are the No. 1 team in the nation for the second week in a row in the latest AP top 25 poll.

After the previously No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes lost to West Virginia, it was all but ensured that the Zags would hold onto the top spot for at least one more week. Gonzaga now owns a sizeable point lead over the current No. 2 squad, the Duke Blue Devils.

Losses by Ohio State and Louisville allowed a bit of a shakeup in the top five. Duke, Kansas, and Oregon all moved up a few spots to numbers two, three, and four, respectively.

Elsewhere around the polls for Gonzaga fans interest, Arizona clung on at No. 25, and Saint Mary’s is now getting a few more votes and is on the cusp of potentially cracking into the top 25 sooner than later. Washington fell out of the top 25 after losing to Houston on Christmas day.

Presuming Gonzaga takes care of business this week, they should be the top team next week as well. Duke doesn’t play the quality of opponents necessary to leapfrog the Zags and Kansas only has one game this week.

Here is the latest AP Top 25 poll.
