The Charlotte Hornets President of Basketball Operations & General Manager Mitch Kupchak announced today guards Josh Perkins and Joe Chealey have been placed on waivers.
Josh, Gonzaga’s all-time assists leader, was not picked in this year’s NBA draft but did play with the Hornets Summer League team. His 7 points, 3 assists and 1 steal per game average in four appearances were good enough to get him invited to the Hornets training camp. He’s appeared in two Hornet’s preseason games, averaging 1 point, 3 assists and 2 rebounds per game.
According to At The Hive, the SBNation Charlotte Hornets fan-site, Perkins signed a “Exhibit 10” contract incentivizing he spend the season with the Hornets G-League team, the Greensboro Swarm. Slamonline.com states players waived before Oct 17, who report the the G-League affiliate and spend 60 days with the team, earn a bonus of up to $50,000.
Should Josh chose a different route and explore his options overseas, he has the talent to possibly equal the success of two of his former teammates, Nigel Williams-Goss and Kevin Pangos. NWG turned two successful seasons in Serbia and Greece into a $5 million, three-year deal with the Utah Jazz. Pangos, after two highly successful seasons in Lithuania, played last season with FC Barcelona earning a reported $1.5 Million.
