College basketball rankings: Gonzaga falls to No. 7 in latest AP Poll

Despite the two wins, Gonzaga doesn’t rise.

NCAA Basketball: Gonzaga at Brigham Young Rob Gray-USA TODAY Sports

The Gonzaga Bulldogs fell from No. 6 to No. 7 in the latest AP Poll despite a week where they won both road games against San Diego and BYU. In a year where the top 25 has been rather turbulent, Week 16 didn’t provide a whole lot of wiggle room to rise up.

Virginia and Michigan State remained numbers one and two, with Xavier and Villanova swapping spots three and four. Duke stayed as the No. 5 team in the country. The Kansas Jayhawks jumped over Gonzaga to take hold of the No. 6 spot, rising from No. 8.

It is of course hard to be critical of the voters there. Where as Gonzaga played San Diego and BYU, a couple of nice looking wins, Kansas beat Oklahoma at home and Texas Tech (last week’s No. 6 team) on the road. That leap over Gonzaga is more than justified.

Elsewhere for Gonzaga fans, Saint Mary’s stayed at No. 22, and Ohio State ugh cofffeeee fell from No. 13 to No. 16 moved up to No. 13 from No. 16.

Here is the full poll for the week.
