College basketball rankings: Zags rise, but Saint Mary’s rises more

According to AP voters, the Zags are no longer the top dogs in the WCC.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs rose to No. 14 in the latest AP poll after winning both of their WCC contests this week. The bigger story for Zag fans isn’t that, but what happened to their arch-rivals.

The Saint Mary’s Gaels jumped over the Zags, rising to No. 13 from No. 16. This is anything but deserved, considering the Gaels own a win over the Zags in Spokane. On top of that, last week, Saint Mary’s played BYU, the third-best team in the league.

Elsewhere in the top 10, there was movement, but not very much at the top. Villanova, Virginia, Purdue, and Duke stayed teams No. 1-4, with Michigan State taking Kansas’ place at No. 5.

Other teams to watch for Gonzaga: Ohio State dropped to No. 17 after losing to Penn State last week, and Florida dropped to No. 23 after losing to South Carolina. Creighton, who Gonzaga owns a win over, are still receiving votes.

Here is the full AP poll.
