College basketball rankings: This week’s AP poll is bonkers

Gonzaga drops a couple of spots, Saint Mary’s rises 100.

NCAA Basketball: Gonzaga at Santa Clara
My thoughts exactly Mark.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs dropped two spots in the latest AP poll, falling to No. 15 after a week that saw them lose at home to the Saint Mary’s Gaels.

There is a lot to unpack in this week’s poll, so let’s start with that other WCC team. Saint Mary’s was receiving votes last week, and apparently the voters were so impressed with the win in Spokane that the Gaels rose all the way up to No. 16.

Now, not to take anything away from Saint Mary’s here: winning in Spokane is hard, and that win was very important. But was that win a chance to rise essentially 10 spots? Seriously? Gonzaga was ranked No. 13, and quite a soft No. 13 at best. I’m all for tooting our own horn around here, but I’m not sure a win against Gonzaga is a 14 spot moving win.

There were some other interesting movements in the poll. Ohio State rose from No. 22 to No. 13 after wins over...Minnesota and Northwestern...OK then. I guess that win is a gift that keeps on giving. In other good news for Gonzaga, the Florida Gators are finally back in the top 25, finishing at No. 20.

Yeah, we get it here. “The polls don’t matter” blah blah blah etc etc etc. But still, normally they are a pretty good indicator of the overall health of the college basketball landscape. This week it seems like the entirety of the voting population spent last night in South Philadelphia.
