The target is squarely on the back of Randy Bennett and the Saint Mary’s Gaels this season after the WCC coaches unanimously (sort of) picked the Gaels to win the conference.
Each coach wasn’t allowed to vote for their own team, so it appears that Randy Bennett voted for Gonzaga, and Mark Few voted for Saint Mary’s. Here are the results of the poll:
- Saint Mary’s (9), 81
- Gonzaga (1), 73
- BYU, 62
- USF, 59
- Santa Clara, 44
- San Diego, 37
- Pepperdine, 30
- Pacific, 24
- Portland, 21
- LMU, 19
We’ve gone over this in depth, but much of this hype revolves around the senior-laden squad sitting in Moraga this year. That seniorism extended to the Preseason All-WCC team, which Saint Mary’s led with three players. The Zags had two players nominated for the Preseason All-WCC team, and it seems like there could end up being quite a few more by the end of the year.
