Gonzaga senior guard Jordan Mathews has been named a finalist for the Jerry West Award, the annual award given to the top shooting guard in the nation. Mathews is one of 10 players to receive the honor.
Mathews transferred to Gonzaga for his final year of college eligibility after playing three seasons at Cal. The senior is averaging 10.5 points while shooting 39.2 percent from three-point range, helping lead the Zags during their undefeated season.
The range and accuracy of Mathews has been critical to opening up the post game for Gonzaga’s bigs. Mathews has been instrumental in big games as well, hitting four of six threes against Saint Mary’s to the tune of 16 points.
Like all of these awards, it really seems like it’ll be an uphill battle for Mathews to win, especially considering that he isn’t relied upon at Gonzaga to be the top scorer like he was at Cal.
