Domantas Sabonis and the rest of the Lithuanian team will have time to relax on the beaches of Rio now after they lost to Australia, 90-64, on Wednesday morning.
Australia jumped out to a 26-17 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, spurred by 24 points from Patty Mills. It was a truly disappointing finish for the Lithuanian team, who started out the Olympics going a promising 3-0, but lost their final two games in the group stage before making an early exit.
For Gonzaga fans, it was another game where Sabonis wasn’t able to do too much. He finished with just one point and three rebounds in almost 14 minutes. Sabonis went 0-for-3 from the floor and just 1-of-4 from the free throw line.
After stellar runs in the 2015 U20, the 2014 and 2013 U18 and the 2012 U16 Euro Championships, from a statistical point of view, the Olympics were largely not something to remember for the Gonzaga grad. Sabonis finished his Olympic run averaging 5.5 points and 4.3 rebounds over 18.5 minutes per game. He show 37.1 percent from the floor.
Still, there will be plenty of time in Sabonis’ basketball career for him to rebound. He should have at least two more sets of Olympic competitions in his legs, if not more, so there will be better chances down the road to help lead his team to a medal.
