Domantas Sabonis is probably going to skip the NBA Summer League and is expected to play for Lithuania in the 2016 Olympics, The Oklahoman reported.
For Gonzaga players, that is a little bit of a bummer, but also good news to see him represent his country. The NBA Summer League would be a solid gauge to see how ready for the NBA Sabonis actually is. Although he will face quality opponents in the Olympics, the league he needs to succeed at is the one happening in Las Vegas.
Sometimes though, country pride trumps personal success.
This isn’t much of a surprise, considering Sabonis’ father Arvydas Sabonis is the president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation. The Lithunaian National Team automatically qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics after being finalists of EuroBasket 2015. They are the only team alongside China, Australia, and the United States to compete in each Olympic Games since 1992.
