The Gonzaga Bulldogs were once again picked as the preseason favorite to win the West Coast Conference regular season title in a poll of all 10 conference head coaches. Unlike most years where they are the unanimous winner, the Zags only garnered seven of the 10 first place votes.
That puts the Zags on top, but not by much. The Zags finished with 79 points, and the Saint Mary’s Gaels were hot on their heels with 75 points and the other three first-place votes. Here is the entire preseason poll:
Any guesses on which three coaches in the league didn’t pick Gonzaga? My money is on Randy Bennett and Saint Mary’s as one for sure dissenter. No idea about the other two however.
Then again, the WCC has a rather unheard of four brand-new head coaches taking the helm this season: Damon Stoudamire at Pacific, Terry Porter at Portland, Kyle Smith at San Francisco, and Herb Sendek at Santa Clara.
The All-WCC Preseason Men’s Basketball Team was also announced, although it would appear that transfers are not allowed on this list. The Zags landed two players, but Saint Mary’s takes home the gold with three players. When the coaches were polled, we have no idea, but congratulations to Przemek Karnowski and Josh Perkins.
