What a sweet, sweet headline. The Gonzaga Bulldogs have advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in six years as they absolutely streamrolled he Iowa Hawkeyes tonight at the Key Arena. The Bulldogs came out swinging and while Iowa mounted a couple of short rallies here and there, you never really got a sense they were in the game. All the credit goes to Mark Few and the Zags who were clearly on a mission tonight to get past the first weekend and take Iowa out of it right away.
Catch your breath yet? Let's have fun with a few bullet points:
- Kyle Wiltjer. Can't say enough about the Gonzaga forward. He literally came out from the tip off and had that look. He made his first eight shots and didn't miss until early in the 2nd half. Wiltjer was obviously doing his offensive thing in excess but his defensive effort was stellar and he was hitting the glass with force. He started the Zags off well and never let Iowa get involved.
- Mark Few's gameplan was outstanding and so well executed. Leading up to the game, the fear was "shit, they are tall too" but Few used the bigs quickness to their advantage as they were constantly slashing to the hoop and the guards were finding them with ease. Sabonis and Karnowski were huge, as well.
- Defense! This is a very solid Iowa offensive team and they were held under 70 points by the Bulldogs. Kyle Dranginis was phenomenal on Jarrod Uthoff in the 2nd half and Aaron White was the highest scoring non-factor I have ever seen.
- Kevin Pangos. Every time the Zags needed a big shot, guess who stepped up.
CELEBRATE! IT IS SWEET SIXTEEN TIME!
