Poll Watch: Gonzaga falls to number three in AP top 25, stay second in coaches poll

Despite winning, Gonzaga fell one spot in one poll and it was entirely justified.

Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

The Gonzaga Bulldogs fell one spot to No. 3 in the AP top 25 polls, despite winning both games last week. Gonzaga didn't budge and held strong at No. 2 in the USA Today coaches poll.

The general rule of thumb is that as long as teams win, they keep on rising in the polls. But there are exceptions to that rule and last week was a perfect example why.

Gonzaga rose up to No. 2 in the nation last week after the Virginia Cavaliers lost to the Duke Blue Devils -- not exactly a black eye on the resume. Last week, Gonzaga won both of its games, but didn't do so in a very convincing manner. Both Santa Clara and San Francisco hung around for a lot longer time than people expected.

Virginia, on the other hand, had a much more impressive weekend. The Cavaliers defeated then No. 12 North Carolina on the road and then followed that up with a win over then No. 9 Louisville. For now, Gonzaga and Virginia will split the difference.
