In a news story that should shock absolutely no one, Gonzaga has been selected to win the West Coast Conference this season by the coaches. The Zags were a unanimous selection and received the highest possible point total of 81. BYU was voted as the runner up to the Zags with Saint Mary's coming in third place. Here is a look at the full poll:
Team (First Place Vote) | Pts. |
1. Gonzaga (9) | 81 |
2. BYU (1) | 69 |
3. Saint Mary's | 62 |
4. San Francisco | 59 |
5. San Diego | 47 |
6. Portland | 45 |
7. Pepperdine | 29 |
7. Santa Clara | 29 |
9. Loyola Marymount | 19 |
10. Pacific | 10 |
As I said, these results come as little surprise. BYU should be the only true resistance that the Zags face on their way to a 14th WCC crown in 15 seasons. The Cougars do feature Tyler Haws and Kyle Collinsworth so those matchups, particularly in Provo, will be a great test for the Bulldogs. The rest of the conference, however, is still not yet near the level of the 13th ranked Bulldogs.
The preseason All-WCC roster was also released today. Here's a look at that group:
Name | Institution | Yr. | Pos. |
Jared Brownridge | Santa Clara | So. | G |
Kyle Collinsworth | BYU | Jr. | G |
Stacy Davis | Pepperdine | Jr. | F |
Johnny Dee | San Diego | Sr. | G |
Tyler Haws | BYU | Sr. | G |
Przemek Karnowski | Gonzaga | Jr. | C |
Kevin Pangos | Gonzaga | Sr. | G |
Kriuze Pinkins | San Francisco | Sr. | F |
Thomas van der Mars | Portland | Sr. | C |
Brad Waldow | Saint Mary's | Sr. | C |
Pangos and Karnowski are the only representatives from the Bulldogs to make the 10-man roster. It goes without saying that this roster could look considerably different at year end as most of us expect at least one of either Kyle Wiltjer and Byron Wesley (ideally, both) to have All-WCC type seasons.
