Domantas Sabonis Likely To Select Gonzaga, Father Confirms

It isn't signed, sealed, and delivered but all signs point to Sabonis in a Gonzaga uniform next year...

James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

Several rumored deadlines have come and gone in the Domantas Sabonis saga with no decision but today, someone with 'Sabonis' in their name has gone on record about the situation.  That person was Domantas' father, Arvydas, who said in a recent interview that Domantas is likely to go to the United States and play for Gonzaga.  Using the wonderful Google translator, here is the full quote:

"He wants to go to the U.S. and probably will - decision time is short. Correctly mentioned, it would be Gonzaga University. Of course, there is a proposal and from Unicaja, but the NCAA unify science and sport. In addition, Europe is still the most time spent on the bench, but he could be the NCAA Starter start the player.

The decision is a tough one for Domantas who became the youngest player to compete in the Spanish league this year.  While playing time has been on the low end for him, he's gotten valuable experience against some of the top players in the European league.

For Gonzaga, this will likely elevate the program to a top-15 rank next season and Sabonis will garner immediate playing time along Przemek Karnowski, Kyle Wiltjer, and Ryan Edwards.  For Edwards, it could raise the potential of a redshirt season which could be wildly beneficial for the young center.
