Since Gonzaga finished up their demolition of Portland on Saturday, it would be an understatement to say that I have been doing a large amount of reflecting about this program. It is easy to take for granted a 14 year stretch that has, for lack of a better word, has been miraculous. From flash in the pan, to the top dog in a weak conference, to become a national brand, the journey has been astounding. Today, we can add another major step in the progression of Gonzaga basketball as they are now the No. 1 team in the country as voted on by the Associated Pressy. Yep, a school with under 5,000 undergraduate students enrolled has put together the top team in the country.
The Zags are currently riding a 12-game winning streak which has not seen them lose since their last second (literally) heartbreak loss at the hands of Butler. While there has been and will continue to be endless debate about whether this team deserves the No. 1 spot, the good news is that if they just keep winning, the debate will take care of itself.
It is taking a whole lot of restraint to not hit the local watering hole and start celebrating but I guess we can hopefully do that in April as there is no doubt that this special team has what it takes to go the distance!
