Drew Barham to transfer to Gonzaga

We have learned that former Memphis redshirt sophomore Drew Barham is the newest member of the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Barham, who will graduate this summer, was in Spokane the past few days and committed while on his visit. Because he plans to graduate this summer, transfer rules state that Barham is eligible for immediate participation which is huge for a team that has now lost three transfers this offseason. Barham has two years of eligibility remaining.

Originally a member of Southern Illinois, Barham, a Memphis native, asked to be released from that scholarship in 2009 to walk on at Memphis. Barham faced an uphill battle throughout his time at Memphis but eventually was granted a scholarship prior to his sophomore season in 2010. In the 2010-11 season, he started 10 games and appeared in 27. He averaged two points per game and 1.5 rebounds.

Big picture on this addition is that it is a depth move. Gonzaga was down to eight scholarship players that could participate this coming season. His stats will not blow you away but Barham provides a versatile player that can play a couple minutes and accept a role. Gonzaga doesn't really need a guy that can come in and blow up the rotation, they need a guy that fits in with the current team and can do some little things. Overall, I'm a big fan of this move by the staff. Gonzaga will still have four scholarships to use in 2013.
