Skylar Spencer impresses at Under Armour Best of Best Camp

The summer AAU circuit is well underway and a number of Gonzaga prospects are in action and making names for themselves.  One prospect that appears to be ready for a breakout is California power forward Skylar Spencer.  Spencer, who is the 80th best prospect in the 2012 cycle according to Rivals.com, was in action yesterday in Atlanta for the Under Armour Best of Best camp.  Some of the top 2012 prospects were in attendance as Spencer competed against Mitch McGary, J.P. Tokoto, and Shaq Johnson.

Spencer has quickly became one of Max's and my favorite prospects to fill a scholarship in 2012.  Not only does he possess athleticism currently not present on the Gonzaga front line, but he also has an outstanding feel for the game on defense.  Rivals.com had this to say about Spencer's performance yesterday in Georgia:

2012 PF Skylar Spencer: The 6'8 210-pound post player is a very good athlete and uses it to make plays on both ends of the floor in the paint, whether it be blocking shots, grabbing big rebounds, or finishing with an exciting dunk.

Gonzaga is going to need some players that are ready to make an instant impact down low in the 2012 class. With Rob Sacre graduating next May and Elias Harris always being a question mark, the Zags will need to have some skill off the bench.  Sam Dower, Kelly Olynyk, and Ryan Spangler should be a very solid trio but Spangler is totally unproven and there are questions about Olynyk's abilities as an interior player.  Spencer's athletic ability and his ability to run the floor seems to fit this system perfectly.  He still needs work in terms of an offensive post game but that is something that can be developed and with Sam Dower and co. roaming the paint, this team should not need a post to come in and be a big time scorer.

In May, Spencer told Scout.com that Gonzaga was his favorite at the moment.  Donny Daniels has been recruiting him basically since his arrival.  Spencer said he was going to visit hopefully this summer but a date has not been set to our knowledge.
