Game Previews
2009-10 Team Previews: Mississippi Valley State

Before the Zags open their home season with highly anticipated games versus Washington State and Wake Forest, the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils travel to the Kennel on November 14th for the regular season opener. The Delta Devils come from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and a program that is trying to reestablish itself. They are headed by Head Coach Sean Woods who will be in is sophomore campaign after a rocky first season with his club. Interesting note, many of you might remember Sean Woods as the player who scored the 10 foot jumper for Kentucky with 2.9 seconds left to put his Wildcats up 103-102 before Christian Laettner made the miracle shoot that sent Duke to the Final Four in the 1992 NCAA tournament and later to win the National Championship.
Well now Woods is the man in charge at MVS after assistant coaching stints at High Point, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and TCU. So, just like last year when Coach Few scheduled Montana State Billings and Idaho as a warm up for the Old Spice Classic, Mississippi Valley State should be a warm up before the team travels to East Lansing to play Tom Izzo and his Michigan State Spartans on November 17th.

WCC Finale: Zags @ Toreros

After surviving not only the Santa Clara Broncos team, but also their slightly intoxicated fans, the Gonzaga Bulldogs head to San Diego knowing that a win will clinch an undefeated regular season in the WCC. While many fans across the nation scoff at what is considered to be a lackluster conference, it's important to realize that only Memphis and Gonzaga are currently undefeated in conference play. This game offers Gonzaga a rare and unique opportunity to close out a special conference season, and will also provide the Zags with an opportunity to continue and climb the polls as the teams in front of them lose. In just the last few days, Clemson, Arizona St., Marquette, and Purdue have all lost, and there will certainly be more upsets over the next two weeks. If GU can take care of business, there is a legitimate chance at a top 15 or even top 10 finish.

Gonzaga at St. Mary's: The Rematch?

On January 29th, St.Mary's arrived in Spokane with a 15 game winning streak and the belief that this was the year that they were going to win the WCC. After a terrific first half performance, which saw the Gaels lead 39-33 at the break, it seemed that all the hype surrounding this game was worthwhile. However, a serious injury to Patty Mills at the end of the first half took the life out of St. Mary's, and the Zags ran away with a 69-62 victory. Since the loss of Patty Mills, the Gaels have been in self-destruct mode, and have lost 3 of their last 4 games. Sadly for St. Mary's fans, the teams hasn't been competitive in losses to Portland (84-66) and Santa Clara (80-62).

Zags Host Santa Clara as Home Stand Continues
Can you believe that it has been over a month since the Gonzaga Bulldogs have played a home game in front of the students. The last time the Zags hosted a game with school in session, the team was 8-1 and A.J. Price was days away from ripping out the hearts of Gonzaga fans. While times have certainly been hard since Texas Southern visited Spokane on 12/18, recent results seem to indicate that this team has started to regain some of their pre-UConn swagger.
With WCC play offically under way, GU has an excellent opportunity to work out all the kinks, and build a huge stream of confidence as we all look forward to the January 29th showdown with St. Mary's. However, before we can turn our attention to that much anticiapted match up, this team needs to take care of business against the rest of the WCC. After defeating Portland in the opener, it's time for Gonzaga to turn its attention to the inconsistent but talented Santa Clara Broncos.

Zags Host Pilots to Open West Coast Conference Play

The murderous non conference schedule for the Gonzaga Bulldogs is all but over. The Zags will take on two more non conference opponents before the season is over; the Memphis Tigers and the powerhouse that is the South Carolina Upstate Spartans. The next step for the Bulldogs is the West Coast Conference. The Portland Pilots open up Gonzaga's conference schedule as they travel to Spokane to take on the Zags on Saturday at 5 P.M. PST.
The Pilots have been one of the few bright spots in this conference thus far. Coach Eric Reveno's team has been accustomed to battling to stay out of the cellar in the conference but this year Portland finds itself sitting at third in the WCC, right behind St. Mary's and Gonzaga. Reveno, who is now in his third year as the Portland head man, seems to be turning this program around and has this team above .500 heading into conference play for the first time in his tenure.

The Rematch: Zags vs. Vols Part Deux
It seems like it was a long time ago that the Gonzaga Bulldogs dominated the Old Spice Classic field, including a clinical victory over the Tennessee Volunteers in the championship game. At the time, both schools were ranked in the top 15, and seemed like legitimate challengers for the Final 4. However, it seems that both teams might have peaked in the month of November, and are on the verge of becoming irrelevant heading into conference play. This game is vital for both teams as each needs to regain the confidence and swagger that was displayed in the terrific Old Spice Classic final.

Zags-Utes Matchup Could Define Gonzaga's Season
I never would have thought I'd be writing this at the beginning of the season but it appears that tonight's game against the 7-5 Utah Utes has become a crucial game. Before AJ Price hit the three-point basket to send the Connecticut-Gonzaga game on December 20th into overtime, Gonzaga was staring down a top three spot in the polls. When the shot dropped, Gonzaga was left lying flat on the floor and Portland State took it to them. Now, eight days later on New Year's Eve, Gonzaga attempts to get back on the winning track against the Utah Utes.
This is not the Utah Utes of Rick Majerus but, at the same time, this does not appear to be the Gonzaga Bulldogs of the Old Spice Classic (which seems like it took place years ago). Since the Old Spice Classic, Gonzaga has dropped three out of six games and their three wins have come against an intramural Indiana team, a winless Texas Southern team, and a Washington State squad that is really struggling to find an identity. Utah has been no better. They dropped a head-scratcher to Idaho State but the real damage came when they lost their opening game to Division II Southwest Baptist. They have the eighth best record in the Mountain West Conference right now.
These two teams square off tonight looking for something to get them jump started and once again...I am nervous
