Pre-Tournament CBSSports.com BlogPoll

Well, this will be the last blogpoll until the 2009 college basketball season is settled.  There has been a lot of shifting this week thanks to some crazy conference tournament results.  What does that mean for Gonzaga? A whole lot of sitting and watching the rest of the nation falter.  The Zags have found their way back into the top ten.  The major movers and shakers this week are Louisville, who has been the hottest team in the nation, Washington, who failed to impress anyone in the Pac-10 tourney, and Clemson, who really should think about ending their season before February because after that they fall off.

We'll have the compilation bracket up later today, for now, take a look at what we turned in this week.

Fourth Edition of the CBS Sports BlogPoll

Apologies for last week, we got a tad sidetracked and did not submit a poll.  We're back now and better than even after a crazy week in college basketball.  Explanations follow the poll...

After a brief hiatus from the top spot, the Connecticut Huskies climb back to take their rightful place as the number one team in the nation.  Out of every team in the nation, they have been the most consistent all year.  The sad thing for them is that I don't know if it translates into an NCAA title because of the loss of Jerome Dyson.  Time will tell...

Something has to be said about the outstanding coaching of Bill Self and John Calipari.  Both were in last year's NCAA Title game and were absolutely exposed by graduation and the NBA Draft.  Kansas was stripped of virtually every key player fom that title team and Memphis lost the super-talented Derrick Rose, and their two leaders Joey Dorsey and Chris Douglas-Roberts.  People were debating if these two teams would even be in the top-25 at the start of the year and now here they sit at #2 and #8, respectively.  Both teams struggled early in the year but both coaches have done an outstanding job at getting their youth to play like seniors.

Gonzaga's got the formula down.  Just keep winning and everything else will take care of itself.  Basically every team remotely close to the Zags in the rankings lost, and lost big.  Clemson was dismantled this week and was Missouri, Marquette, and Arizona State.  The Zags, ugly or not, just keep plugging along without anyone batting an eye.  Is it possible to dream top-10 at this point? Probably not but I could see teams like LSU, UW, and Wake Forest hitting rough patches.

I think the only noticable omission may be Illinois...and we totally admit to having a pretty large Big-10 bias.  In our defense, they did lose today and it's hard to forget that 33 point performance against Penn State.

Last week's ballot

Dropped Out: Ohio St. (#16), Florida St. (#19), Florida (#24).

Obviously some major, major changes this week.  Missouri has continued to impress the nation and rises to seventh this week.  The other major mover is obviously Arizona State.  After taking care of business against UCLA and USC, the Sun Devils took advantage of some losses ahead of them and moved up 11 spots this week.  ASU was reeling a few weeks before after being swept by the Washington schools but it seems like they have found their step.

Gonzaga debuts in our vesion of the blogpoll for the first time this week after a couple of 'decent' conference wins.  The Zags rise by the virtue mainly of other teams losing, and with five losses, they probably deserve a ranking at this point in the season.  How much that ranking means?  Not a whole lot if they continue playing the way they have been.  We shall see though.

Week Three BlogPoll

The blogging nation is vast and full of opinions and one of the ways these opinions are expressed is through BlogPolls which is basically a bunch of bloggers voting on the Top 25 teams just like the Coaches and the AP does.  Obviously, our input is not as important as the coaches and AP writers but we like to think it matters.  This blogpoll consists of a number of excellent college basketball blogs from across the nation.  Many are general basketball blogs and many, like The Slipper Still Fits, are affiliated with a certain team.  Here is the third installment of the overall BlogPoll and how The Slipper Still Fits voted.
