SI: Seth Davis discusses next season's expectations with Coach Few
No big news here, pretty much an affirmation of what we already know. A couple of interesting points are Few's high expectations of Sam Dower and neither Mathis gets a mention.
"It's a remarkable thing to say about a program in the West Coast Conference, but the Zags don't rebuild anymore, they just reload. Aside from Matt Bouldin, they will return every major contributor from last year's 27-7 team that reached the second round of the NCAA tournament, and they will boast arguably the strongest and deepest front line Few has had in his 13 years as head coach.
That frontcourt will again have an international flavor. Kelly Olynyk and Robert Sacre will both play for Canada this summer at the World Championships, and 6-8 sophomore Elias Harris will suit up for his native Germany. Few was concerned that playing in international competition might hinder his guys' physical development because they can't build up their bodies the way most college players do in the summertime, but there is an obvious upside to playing against older professionals in a high-pressure environment. Thanks largely to the bird dog work of his assistant Tommy Lloyd, Few has really thrived in recruiting international players and has every intention on continuing that practice.
"We're just trying to get the best players out there, whether they're from California and Oregon or Germany and France," he told me. "Plus the recruiting process is a lot simpler over there. Usually there's a player and his parents and that's it. It's not as convoluted as it is over here."
Few also has high hopes for 6-10 forward Sam Dower, a lefty from Minneapolis who redshirted last season. "He could have helped us last year, but it was just a numbers thing," Few said. Another newcomer and foreign player, 6-4 French native Marquise Carter, a junior college transfer, will be featured in the backcourt alongside 5-11 junior Demetri Goodson. And keep an eye out for redshirt freshman David Stockton -- yes, the son of that patron saint of Gonzaga basketball, John Stockton -- to further bolster the Bulldogs' perimeter. This team will need all hands on deck in the early going because Few has once again assembled a brutal nonconference schedule that includes Illinois, Xavier, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Wake Forest and a spot in the CBE Classic in Kansas City, where the field will also include Kansas State, Duke and Marquette."
ESPN loves TSSF
ESPN Rumors filled a large post poached exclusively from Max's last write up. Not sure how long it will be up so here it is:
The hype surrounding Gonzaga freshman Bol Kong started even before the 2010 season began. The 6-foot-6 wing was supposed to be the piece that lifted Gonzaga into the final rounds of the NCAA tournament. However, Kong never got into a consistent groove and now, according to the 'Zaga fan site, The Slipper Still Fits, Kong is just the latest departure for coach Mark Few. Another, point guard G.J. Vilarino, has pledged his troth to Appalachian State and diaper-dandy head coach Jason Capel.
Vilarino has quite a history thus far. He committed to Kentucky, then de-committed and chose Gonzaga. He racked up very few minutes and a few DNPs as a freshman, and now he's on the move again. Truthfully, it could be a good move when all is said and done. Vilarino was somewhat expendable for the Kentuckys and Gonzagas of DI, but he'll be a major piece for the Mountaineers and their first-time head coach.
That's not to say these two departures (and we haven't mentioned the other two yet) won't impact the Zags. Last season, only Elias Harris and Manny Arop had a higher three-point percentage than Kong. Arop only took 8 three-pointers and is more of a defensive presence while Harris will probably be featured more on the interior in 2011. Without Kong, the Zags' best chance for an outside threat comes in the form of Steven Gray.
Help may be on the way. Few's class of 2010 is composed of two shooting guards. Marquise Carter is a JuCo transfer, but true freshman Keegan Hyland may be the long-term answer behind the arc. In addition, the SlipperStillFits.com crew wax poetic about German recruit Mathis Monninghoff, calling him a "Micah Downs clone, with an even more complete and developed offensive game.".

No division split for Pac-10 Basketball
I saw this on ESPN and thought I would pass it along. Apparently the Pac-10 will split into divisions for football only and they will meet the challenge of a 12 team conference head on. I was looking forward to seeing Romar's head explode when he found out that he would not venture further south than Eugene, but it appears that this will have to wait.
Nick Johnson's insane dunk at Peach Jam
The blog also gives quick mention of Kyle Wiltjer and the incredible talent at Oakland.
Nathan Doudney Update
I don't remember much about Nate Doudney other than he was injured my freshman year. But it is good to see that he is flourishing (with Blake Stepp no less).
Calipari Calls Wiltjer
It is no surprise that Calipari is calling Wiltjer...he's without a doubt one of the hottest players on the AAU circuit.
It will be very, very interesting to see how he cuts down his list when school starts back up. Any guesses?
Pargo's Buzzer Beater
Nice little article about Pargo and his buzzer beater vs. the Magic in summer league. Looking forward to seeing him get a shot next season in the NBA.
Wiltjer shines at LeBron camp
Quick piece about Kyle Wiltjer's performance so far at LeBron's camp. There is both the specific piece on him at the beginning of the article as well as a note down below on the schools looking at him.
Dollars and success perspective
Another example of the excellent job the entire staff at GU does...they are getting tremendous bang for the buck.
