Rumors have been swirling all offseason about potential departures. A week ago, we learned of senior wing Gerard Coleman's transfer and today, Jim Meehan of the Spokesman Review reported this:
Forward Luke Meikle won't return to Gonzaga for sophomore season, sources said.— Jim Meehan (@SRJimm) May 27, 2014
The reason for Meikle's departure is unknown at this time but the news is hardly surprising. The Tacoma, WA native played sparingly as a freshman, logging just 4 minutes per game with most of those coming in mop up time. His shining moment at Gonzaga came very early in the season in Maui when he came off the bench to play eight minutes against Arkansas. In that time, Meikle was 2-2 with four points. He also had two blocks and one rebound.
In the near term, Meikle's loss obviously opens up a scholarship for 2014-15. Unless there are future departures, I would expect the staff to bank that scholarship but we shall see. Given the high expectations for next year's team, the staff may continue to be aggressive.
