Lineup Musings

I know it’s very early for this, but I’ve been wondering what the GU lineup is going to be like for the first part of the 2013/2014 season. Until Nunez is eligible in early January, GU has 10 scholarship players on the roster that are available: Stockton, Pangos, Bell, Coleman, Dranginis, Brarham, Dower, Karnowski, Meikle and Edwards. From most everything I’ve read, it sounds like Meikle and Edwards really need a redshirt year to get up to D1 level, leaving 8 scholarship players available.

So what’s the lineup/playing time going to be? Here’s my guess:

1 – Pangos (30), Stockton (10)

2 – Bell (30), Coleman (10)

3 – Coleman (20), Barham (5), Dranginis (15)

4 – Dower (20), Barham (20)

5 – Karnowski (30), Dower (10)

This is assuming that GBJ is fully healed and in game condition. For 1, 2 and 3 it seems like we have good flexibility, with at least 3 players that can play the 1, 4 that can play the 2, and 3 at the 3. It seems like an injury or foul trouble could be handled without major disruption. When looking at the 4 and 5 it gets a little more interesting. Barham at the PF seems like a mismatch when considering some of the teams GU could see in Maui but I don’t expect Karnowski to be able to give 40 high quality minutes/game, especially in the tournament, so Dower will see some time at center.

I do expect Meikle and Edwards to be in uniform and ready to go, but only if injury or extreme circumstance forces them to burn their redshirt year.

Once Nunez is available I expect Dower to get more minutes at center and Barham and Dranginis having to fight for minutes.
