Perspective

What's the common thread in this post? A few thoughts that all come from a change in perspective on our amazing team and program.

As the hype and hopes for this season intensify, it is wonderful to remember how lucky we are to have these last 15 seasons. Sure, we've never won the tourney, and there have been disappointments. But these disappointments happened because we had good teams to begin with. We've never had a lost season in the past 15 years. Every year, Gonzaga basketball has been exciting. Every year we've been at the top of the conference, every year we've gone to the big dance.

As we climb the polls and fight for national recognition as a WCC team, sometimes I am skeptical of how good we are. But then I remember the fear that other mid majors have inspired. Nobody thought of Memphis or Butler as pushovers when they were at their peaks. Memphis in particular comes to mind, because they were always scary when we faced them. We are that scary mid major team this season. Nobody wants to play us unless they want a tough game. The fact that the critics feel the need to dismiss us doesn't mean we don't belong in the top 10 or 5 or 3. We bring up the issue with our play.

Now, after defending our team, honestly, it would be really interesting to play a season in the toughest conference in the nation. I can see the point of the Big Ten supporters, the non-troll ones. It would be very exciting if 6 or 7 teams in the WCC were legitimate NCAA tournament teams each year.

Again, we're so lucky as fans to have this team, these years, and these debates.
