Do people get excited when Old Faithful blows as scheduled?

Let SMC have a little fun where they can get it. It isn’t like it happens that much and it isn’t (in their minds) expected.

Personally, I think the GU students have put in a hard game — on their feet the entire time — definitely a lot more effort than you will ever see in other places. Better to put all that effort in during the game than after. ;=)

Please stop talking about SMC rushing the court...

A few quick things:

1. I’m an SMC slum/fan.
2. I didn’t think the SMC students should have rushed the court in Moraga.
3. I didn’t like that Jorden Page didn’t let the clock run out in moraga.

That being said, rushing the court has nothing to do with the SMC team/players. The players or Randy Bennett for that matter can’t stop drunk students from acting crazy and rushing the court, especially when game is on TV. I’m sure its fun for zags fans to keep bringing it up, buy I just wanted to point out that those actions have nothing to do with delle, Jones, and company.

Anyways, Congrats on the win. Zags played with a lot of intensity and simply outmanned/outphysicaled the Gaels. The fans were loud last night and it affected every Gael with the exception of delle who did his best to keep SMC in game.

no one accused you or the players for rushing the court

but the 3 by Page is a reflection of the team

by BKZ on Feb 10, 2012 12:36 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

the 3 is a reflection of page only....

Page drove for a layup and shot a 3 with less than 35 seconds left… No one else tried to score. Maybe something was lost in translation with the Australian.

Yep, lost in translation...

And, fans rushing the court is a refelection of the fans.

Our fans don’t need to rush the court. End of story.

speaking of "your" fans...

Bipolar is the one term that comes to mind. I have never heard a group of fans go from Debbie downer, the world is ending, tradition/ pride/season gone, etc…. to the most optimistic, positive, world can keep spinning mentality in one night. If you really want to be like your idol Duke fans, you may want to stop with the negative Nancy comments everytime the zags lose a game.

by rpballer25 on Feb 10, 2012 12:49 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Agree about the Bipolar remark....I definitely felt like the sky was falling, this helps, but I still see major flaws.

Please don’t compare us to Duke fans…we’re not that smart and we don’t have that much money

by Irish Zag on Feb 10, 2012 1:04 PM PST up reply actions   3 recs

i had to get a duke shot in there...

Truth be told, I’m actually pretty bipolar with my teams as well. Hopefully, we can get another crack at the zags in the Wcc tourney.

by rpballer25 on Feb 10, 2012 1:09 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

This is how it should be in the WCC

As much as I hate to admit it, splitting the regular season with SMC (or any talented team depending on the year) makes the tournament THAT much more intense. GU played awful in Moraga, SMC did not play great in Spokane, Hopefully the tourny game (assuming both teams make it) is an awesome game that goes down to the wire.

We were talking about "rushing the court"

but since you do not like that topic anymore you try to swerve onto something entirely different….Ok.

I agree that we can get down pretty quickly after a loss.We have come to expect bigger and better things after over a decade of excellence.

What about your fans? SMC’s fans? There aren’t very many. That was easy.

Final 4 or Bust!!~

by gaz-tastic on Feb 10, 2012 7:03 PM PST up reply actions

depends on how you define "excellence"...

If excellence means winning WCC league championships, then yes… A decade of excellence. If excellence means anything else, then sorry my friend, no excellence. Consistently in the tournament is probably a better phrase for zags. You can count on seeing their name in the bracket come march, usually with a line through by round of 32.

by rpballer25 on Feb 10, 2012 8:12 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Oh come on now...this is getting silly.

Try 4 sweet 16s. A line by 32? you just lost all credibility bro.

And this com ing from a fan of a team that was done what exactly? One sweet 16…thats it.

Maybe you should just stop. I know you are probably upset still from last night but c’mon!

Final 4 or Bust!!~

by gaz-tastic on Feb 10, 2012 8:16 PM PST up reply actions

dont take it personal...

It is what is… A lot of zags success in tourney came 9-12 years ago. Other than morrisons squad making a strong push about 5-6 yrs ago, only to hand it to ucla, zags don’t have much success in tourney. It is what it is. I’m not saying Smc has been more successful, just be careful when you throw excellence around. Consistency, not excellence.

by rpballer25 on Feb 10, 2012 8:26 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Oh no, nothing taken "personal" whatsoever.

I am not the first to bandy about the term “decade of excellence” regarding the Zags. It is the term used and subject of, a very well known DVD with the same title. I suggest you view it, and perhaps learn something.

You are very creative in side stepping your original argument regarding not liking Zag fans talking about “rushing the court” by SMC fans, and bringing up your concerns about my taking things personally and branching off into a comparative of our two teams and a warning about my terminology of “excellence”. Very comendable try.

It’s just that it does not fly. None of it.

Should we also bring up SMC’s choke out last year in the first round of the NIT…… AT HOME? Or should we just move on to something more fun?

I’m game for whatever.

Final 4 or Bust!!~

by gaz-tastic on Feb 11, 2012 12:59 AM PST up reply actions

again, take a step back, and try to absorb what i'm saying...

I’m not arguing that SMC has been better than the Zags, clearly that is not the case. Zags have dominated WCC for about 12-13 years now. That’s a fact, not arguing that. Zags have had a decade of excellence… Wait for it… In the WCC. Why is that such a bad thing in your eyes? There’s nothing wrong with dominating your conference, but let’s be clear there is no domination or excellence outside of the WCC. Not sure why these facts bother you so much.

by rpballer25 on Feb 11, 2012 8:29 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

I disagree with rballer25 about his choice in universities, but he's absolutely right,

there’s a difference between consistency and excellence. Gonzaga is the definition of consistency, Butler would be the definition of excellence….so don’t go ripping him on that point….just rip him on the other ones….like being a Gael and rushing the court for no good reason

by Irish Zag on Feb 11, 2012 8:29 AM PST up reply actions

thanks for being objective, irish zag...

Not knocking the zags, clearly I can’t do that given zags have been way more successful than Gaels over past 13 years.

Great game

Defensive effort was solid throughout, rebounding was great, and we remembered who we are. Go Zags

wrong and right

Where I was wrong:
-Daivis S. – He played a lot in the 2nd half, Dind’t necessarilly do much on his own but did allow KP to play off the ball which was big. Kudos to Few for that.
-better FT shooting – fortunate we didn;t need them.

Where I was right
- Frosh guards were great
- Harris getting going. He had to do it by himself but her did make great plays down the stretch.

  • If I were Harris I wouldn’t come back next year. He came out like a man possessed and then we completely stopped going to him. Thumbs down to few for that.

Overall great win. Rob played well tonight but we really went to him a lot, which was risky how he’s been playing lately. Maybe this will get him to turn the corner. Keep the momentum boys and we could finish very strong!!! Saturday is almost as big now.

As long as we're rehashing pregame predictions...

I was right with everything but the score! See below:

“Thumbs up!

5 things will make the difference in our WIN tonight.

1. Sacre’s thumb is now healed and will not have a negative impact on his game.

2. Waldow has been game planned and will not fly under the radar this time.

3. Pangos is smoother at home where his three will fall.

4. Home cookin- nobody beats us at home. It has to be worth 6 points.

5. Our back is against the wall. We will play like our lives depend on a win, and it does.

Zags pull the upset and win 77-73."

well, the general "feeling" of our "bo-polar" fans was one of doom & gloom

Everywhere you look, read, it was the end of “things” as we know it.

So yeah…..pretty much an upset. We were playing poorly, and SMC was on a 12 game roll. Most members were predicting defeat.Even our Site writer could not bear to give his usual predicto.

I was not one of the bi-polar types you were referring too as attested by my post. I knew we would win. :o)

good win, but...

Don’t expect SMC to shoot 34% next time they face Zags. Zags played great, Gaels played horrible. Good win nonetheless.

defense

That might be due to good defense as well. They did miss a few wide open threes but they were threes in a pressure game. All the game have pressure now so we’ll see.

had 4 blocks in the first 6 minutes and forced SMC into many awkward possessions. SMC just isn’t on GU’s level when GU is focused.

Rebounding, rebounding, rebounding....

it does a lot for your team when you limit the other to one shot…..36 to 26 in total rebounds. For once, I finally saw a conscious effort on the part of most players to find a body and box out. We played decent defense, but limiting a scrappy and savvy St Mary’s team to one shot was huge tonight.

by Irish Zag on Feb 9, 2012 11:11 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

Two more things....

1. like it or not, but one Sacre plays better we play better….this team’s success is directly related to Sacre being able to score in the paint.

2. Despite his box score, I really liked the way Edi played tonight, he kept the D honest, and they had to respect his ability to penetrate.

Good win Zags, now keep that fire…

great game for the starting five

bench produced just enough, Dower contributed; but the starters stepped up.

Sacre, Harris, Pangos, & Bell are the key to how far we go into March Madness.

Gonzaga needs to answer this victory with another top effort against LMU as they are hungry; they the Zags, St. Mary’s, & BYU the next three so they will be focused.

GET YOUR DANCING SHOES

GU IS GOING INTO MARCH.

What I didn’t like:

10-19 from the line. THATS IT.

What I liked:
+10 in rebounding
Only 11 Turnovers
WCC officiating, still trying to figure out this whole physical style of basketball, but at least they are making an effort. Example Waldows flob, clearly a flop the ref was so excited that he accidently blew the whistle knowing Waldow flopped, and called a blocking foul, he should have just let Big Rob Dunk on him. (As long as he doesn’t cock it back and get blocked from behind)

What I loved:

Passing out of double teams effectively
Guards taking it to the rim
Stout Defense( That I believe started with the BYU game just a bad stretch of unlucky basketball in the first half)
Guards hitting Contested three point shots.

WHAT WAS EPIC.

THE KENNEL WAS EPIC. INSANE, AWESOME, THE BEST ITS EVER BEEN. INSANE ENVIRONMENT.

Hustle

They attacked harder last night than I have seen in several games. The Zags pushed the ball up the court to create offense and out hustled SMC on defense. In the last game SMC killed us in the paint, but not this time. Sacre’s double block of Wadlow’s lay-ups was pure hustle. I loved the effort they put out. Now they know what it takes to be successful. Wonderful effort and a great win. Congratulations!

Important Message from the East

Close your eyes and repeat after me, “The regular season championship streak is meaningless.” Now that we have resolved that, let’s get down to business! It is now like a golf tournament. You can only control what you are doing. It’s not a contact sport. If the opponent makes birdies, oh well, out of your control. Control what we can control. Obviously win out in the regular season and batten down the hatches for a rubber game with SMC in Vegas.
Listen to this hilarious scenario: SMC wins the regular season, limps into the NCAA’s with consecutive losses to us and we end up with a better seed in the tourney than they do. Hello Randy- better get your AD to schedule somebody. Besides hating on SMC- keep it up Zags- let’s roar into the post season!
One more thing: anyone think home court is more important than ever before. I tried to start a conversation on this weeks ago. Every one of these big games in the WCC have been resounding victories. Have you ever seen that before? (reason: teams shoot more 3’s. Can’t shoot as well on the road?) Congratulations Zags. Only got 4 hours sleep last night.

by MdZagFan on Feb 10, 2012 3:54 AM PST reply actions

Great Win!

Great game, especially at the end when we pulled away from them. It was nice to see SMC become lifeless towards the end after what they did to us down there. And I’m glad to see the students didn’t storm the court. Total amateur hour.
My only complaint, and it’s not much since we won, but I wish we had seen more of Dower in the 2nd half. It really seems like the WCC has no answer for him right now. He almost scores at will when he’s in.
Now hopefully this team can keep up the intensity. They’re going to have to win out to play close to home. Your fans want to see you in Portland! (even if some of us are thousands of miles away on the east coast!)

Edi was a difference-maker

The obvious…
Sacre played a nice game…setting up deep and converting shots he should make and strong post defense.
Pangos – Playing off the ball seems to get him going. Like most teams, hitting a few 3’s really energizes them.
GBJ – strong. When he starts looking for his shot over the top of the screen, he’s gonna find another level for this team.
Harris – I’m most impressed with his improved defense/rebounding.

BUT…last night Guy Edi was the difference in my mind. SMC goes as Dellavedova goes. Not taking anything from GBJ (he played him tough too), but Edi was in his shorts and Dellavedova got very few open looks from 3.

That said…will someone please introduce Mr. Edi to the free throw line…a few hundred times a day! With his slashing style, he’s going to be on the line alot and needs to convert.

Nice game Zags! I have to admit I didn’t see it coming.

having 4 different guys on delle (I loved sacre picking him up on the switch). He was definitely rattled early on with edi’s length.

Agreed.

A well played game by Gonzaga and Mark Few deserves credit for having his boys ready to play.

by Stonesthrower on Feb 11, 2012 7:54 AM PST up reply actions

Few actually showed up and coached this one!

Happy to see it! Also happy to see GU run the final phase of the Mark Few flex offense, utilizing baseline cutters with the pick and read on the wing….when you see that, you know that he finally feels his players have “bought in”

Pangos is awesome.

Sacre came to play, was decisive and for him it makes all the difference….especially having 0 fouls he could really afford to be aggressive in that 2nd half….and he was. nice.

Edi. would shoot 75% + from the FT line if he stepped back off the line about 6-8 inches. Instead of the back of the iron….nothing but net….

Lastly…Statsheet.com is awesome…..I really suggest you check it out if you have not….here are the “GU game notes” from the SMC game:

Gonzaga Game Notes:

Zags has won 100% of the time this season (4-0) after holding an opponent to under 23.8% three point percentage.
This season Gonzaga has won 100% of the time (4-0) when Kevin Pangos has 5 three pointers or more, 100% of the time (7-0) when Robert Sacre has 9 rebounds or more, and 88% of the time (16-2) when Elias Harris has 10 points or more.
Zags set a season low for free throws made.
This is the 13th game at home this season—Zags has a 14.8 average scoring margin against opponents at home.

This marks the 3rd 20-point game of Kevin Pangos’s career.
Robert Sacre has 6 straight double-digit point games.
Elias Harris recorded the 17th double digit rebound game of his career.
Elias Harris recorded a double-double. It was his 7th this season and 16th of his career

Wasn't just the KC

This was the first game where I could cheer all I wanted without people in the non-student section getting upset about it, and the first game where I lost my voice (used to happen about every game back in the old kennel).

Great points Mike

It was great to see this team really box out and go after the rebounds, I feel like the coaching staff finally addressed that problem. But mainly it was nice to see an actual game plan put into effect, and like you said, the coaching staff just really got out of their own way, and let the Zags fight through it as a cohesive unit.

And I don’t know who said it earlier, but I really like what Edi brings to the team, and I wish he’d of gotten more playing time this year, but with that said he needs to play as much as possible right now.

by Irish Zag on Feb 11, 2012 8:39 AM PST up reply actions

My thoughts from last night

As a 2008 alum, I think this was the most exciting game for me since I was a student in the Kennel. The team played better defense (against a good-scoring team) than I’ve seen a long time. If you were to tell me that GU would hold St. Mary’s to 59 points, I would never have believed it. I credit that to Few using several guys to harass Dellevadova and overall great team defense—Holt was held scoreless, Steindl had only one 3 and Rob Jones had only 8 points on an atrocious night from the floor. I really have to give some credit to Elias for the latter, early in the game he came out and denied Jones twice—I think this set the tone for the whole game.

On offense, I think they took it to a whole other level. Did anyone actually see some of Sacre’s post moves? He actually caught the ball, made a quick and strong move, and scored. The one move that really stood out to me was when he took an entry pass in the second half and Steindl was coming over to double team. Instead of waiting for him to get there, Rob took a power step into the key and made a jump hook. It all seemed to happen so fast (in Sacre speed) that I couldn’t believe it. For those of who want to see what I’m talking about, check out the ESPN highlight video. He is also passing out of the double team when it comes, again a big improvement. He still has a lot of work to do—in my opinion he over-analyzes things, he just needs to establish position, take the entry pass and immediately go into his move—but last night was huge.

I don’t have anything to add to what has been said about KP and GBJ, other than I’m excited to see their careers blossom at GU.

The only things I didn’t like about last night was the free-throw shooting (I’m looking at you Edi) and Stockton’s TO’s. Stockton has got to a better a job of playing within himself, when he does that he is an excellent distributor. But at other times, he seems to think he is a PG that needs to drive to the basket or make a difficult, high-risk pass. Just stop that David, play the fundamental ball that got you on the floor in the first place.

Concerning our championship streak, if it ends, I will still be proud of this team. Honestly, did we think they would lose only two conference games? I didn’t. Besides, if the streak ends, it will end more because of St. Mary’s than because of us. They are a legitimately good team and I would rather lose to a worthy adversary than choke away a victory against sub-par competition.

AMAZING!~

With their backs against the wall our team stepped up to the challenge. They played their best game of the season, clobbering a team most thought we would roll over against.

SMC was on quite a roll, winners of 12 straight, and ranked #13 in the country, probably salivating at the thought of a WCC title not yet won but thought to be theirs.

But our youth, and our vets showed heart, and the toughness that many said had been lacking. That title must suddenly look far, far away in the eyes of St. Mary’s players. It’s not ours yet either, but we can see sunlight partially streaming through.

That was gut check time. A monumental win that will be added to Gonzaga lore. I could not be prouder of our team.

Ranking

Sorry, don’t want to beat a dead horse here, but I still don’t get how St. Mary’s is ranked #13 (before the loss last night). If Gonzaga had played the same schedule as the Gaels and had the same record, they would lucky to be ranked 23rd, let along 13th. If St. Mary’s wants to be considered an elite mid-major program, they have to up the difficulty factor in their schedule. Other then Gonzaga and Baylor, they haven’t played anyone in my opinion.

I agree

Both teams are good. Neither team is GREAT. However, both teams have to ability to go off on any given night given their ability to hit the 3 ball. I would expect SMC to fall to around number 22 and Gonzaga to jump up right around…22. This is assuming both teams win tonight of course.

My wife was at the game

and was sitting next to whoever sang the national anthem. she said that everyone was freaking out and thought that he was a big deal, but she had no idea who he was. Does anyone know who sang?

It was Mr. Crosby

he was pretty good. Not perfect, but pretty good.

Mike would have sung circles around him tho. ;o)

Yeah, Robert Crosby

Here is the link to a video of his performance in case anyone wants to experience it again, what an awesome rendition, really got the crowd into it!

And since I haven’t commented yet about the game, I thought it was AWESOME, especially the second half, that was a lot of fun to watch! The atmosphere was electric, the ENTIRE Kennel was making a ton of noise! Loved seeing the enthusiastic nuns in the front row behind the basket too.

Let’s hope we come out ready to play today because as we know, LMU is certainly no walk in the park.
