My first thought:
The press, any college junkie knows three things about the press: 1)it sometimes is effective. 2) It wastes a ton of energy 3) Its very risky. Pressing is seen mostly at end of games when the 2nd point isn't as big a factor. The sooner you press, the more lingering the effects are late in the game. Its fairly easy to break the press and programs that have been bit by the press (see Sweet 16 vs UCLA) usually build set plays on breaking the press. Me personally I still have nightmares about 2006. So why don't we have a set play to get the ball in the middle of the court and run forward, then swing it to a runner (similar to a three man weave vs two that I ran in Jr High, or stop and run a half court offense). If any of us were coaches of the 2006 Gonzaga Bulldogs after that EPIC Collapse, we would have studied the nuances of the press and would forever have figured out the best set plays in the NCAA copied them and installed them into our offense at the start of the season. Why Mark Few can't figure out how to beat a press I don't know, and if he is qualified to coach at this level I'm still not certain. Another point I would make is that if both teams are pressing and effectively that the team with the deeper bench tends to win the game. Simply because they are less tired at the end of the game. So next time Few when you go on a run with the press and they break it once maybe stick to it even if it was one easy bucket.
My second thought:
I have said this before but I will say it again, I HATE WCC referees. There inconsistency is baffling, one minute they call every ticky tack foul, with less then a minute less they don' t call anything. It makes it very difficult to have defenses and offenses adjust to there dictated style of play. They are absolutely horrible and the number 1 reason why I want to switch conferences. I want to get to the Big East as fast as possible, I love the style of play they promote. I'm just baffled at how they continue to take over games. The foul on Harris at the end of the game vs. some of the ticky tack charge calls and the block calls. Its so ridiculously inconsistent.
My last thought
I hate this conference. Great another loss leads to USF storming the court. And then they don' t goto the NCAA tournament, they don't do anything, there one shinning moment in the sun is the day they beat gonzaga. We need to go to another conference where the expectation of every program in the conference is to go to the NCAA tournament. Not oh if we beat Gonzaga its a successful season and our coach keeps his job. Man today sucks.
Few learn to break a press. WCC refs stop sucking. BIG EAST CAN WE GET AN INVITE SOON.
