Khem Birch Not Coming To Spokane

Khem Birch is on his 3rd leg of the Khem Birch tour. He is visiting UNLV on Friday and spending the weekend in Las Vegas. He said he would make a decision on Saturday or Sunday. He did not mention if he planned to visit anyone else. But since he said he was staying in Vegas for the weekend and making his choice this weekend tells me he will be at UNLV for next season. I am glad this is over quickly and to be honest i dont know if he would have fit in with this team. This is a guy who wants to play the PF position and we have players better than him. As i stated before, Wiltjer would be on our bench too. So good luck to Khem and his new team. I would have loved to get him at Gonzaga because we would have a deep bench but i think he knew he was not going to get alot of minutes over guys like KO, Dower, Spangler and Harris.

Good luck

I also wish him all of the best. I like are 4s we have and I am not sure he would have been around long enough tfor us to help him or him to help us. I think he will try and go to the NBA after next season (maybe even before).

New Mexico St...

I just read an article on what Khem was saying about Mid-Major Programs, he stated that he liked how Mid-Majors develop players better, and that High-Major programs want to “win” right away. He also stated that he played with Sim Bhullar on Team Canada and is very close to him, so I say he will choose NM over UNLV. I know Khem visited NM St I believe within the last cpl days, unfortunate we didn’t atleast get him on campus.

I am comfortable with who we have on our roster..If Harris returns, we will also have Spang and KO (maybe he will turn the corner).

Could it be that Coach Few & Co. actually know what they are doing??....

I agree as well that we will be just fine with what we have. This kid would have been a great addition but do we really need him? Before the season most fans were freaking out about the lack of 2012 recruits. Now we lose out on (if you call it that) a high profile recruit and we don"t care. Maybe there is a reason for it. I love the potential in a guy like Spangler. Do we really want to recruit over him or give him a chance? I remember not that long ago when at the end of a blow out we cheered for the bench to get in. Then went wild if they actually scored. Today our 12th man would start for most WWC teams. Be patient and enjoy this team. Go Zags!

Woulda been surprised if he did come to GU

He wants instant PT and does not sound like a guy that would not be content here. Face it, we are not, nor will we ever be, a destination for the 1 and done crowd.

Don't think we had a chance.

I didn’t get my hopes up landing this guy, but I, too, am not disappointed we didn’t get Birch.

However, “we have KO & Spangler”…“Birch wouldn’t even get PT”. You guys are kidding me, right? This guy would mop the floor with our soft bigs.He would easily be our most talented big, even today. Let’s be honest.

I understand that he is not the right fit for Gonzaga, so, like I said, I’m not too disappointed. But, when are Zag fans going to be more focused on winning and getting to the next level rather than consecutive WCC titles?

Sounds like you are saying that unless we get guys that do not fit into the system we are

not focused on getting to the next level? I think by getting the ones that do fit into our system is a major reason we are even able to talk of getting there.

Getting a bunch of one and doners would open up pandoras box and any talk of gelling, and team players, would become extinct. I think we have been getting better and better players. And our chances of “getting to the next level” seems to be getting closer.

We will get there. Butler got there twice in a row and they did not have All Americans for recruits. I am growing tired of the wait, however.

Check back with me in two or three years. If we have not made an elite 8 or better by then, I will change my opinion.

I'm not a fan of one and doners for Gonzaga.

I did not mean to come off as a “we should get 1 and doners” for Gonzaga. I don’t think we should, nor do I think we can. That’s not our style, I agree with you.

You’re right, we have been getting better and better players, and I much prefer 4 year guys than 1 and doners.

You say “we will get there” and I have hoped that forever too, but what will be the turning tide? I’m a Zag til I die, but it gets old and disappointing scheduling a few tough games, losing 2-3 games in WCC, winning the tournament, and getting ousted in the 1st or 2nd round of the tourney.

I was trying to allude to the idea that saying Birch was not needed, or could have not been even beneficial is crazy. I don’t think good teams with a pleathera of above average players win National titles (Gonzaga), teams with good solid role players and one or two “big-timers” meaning guys that can play in the NBA (Melo, Kemba, heck, Gordon Hayward…) are what win national titles. And contrary to what some in Zag nation believe, Elias and Rob aren’t those type of “big-timers”

Thanks for your response

Definitely.

Like I said, I’m a Zag til I die, but it gets old and disappointing scheduling a few tough games early on, getting a little national love, losing 2-3 games in WCC, winning the WCC tournament, and getting ousted in the 1st or 2nd round of the tourney.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of our guys, we just need to have a desire to be better…do more.

I wouldn't call Spanger soft...

but ok…..I have to agree with you here:

when are Zag fans going to be more focused on winning and getting to the next level rather than consecutive WCC titles?

If you don't like my fire then don't come around...

**Spangler**

but then again he does have some glinting earrings…..or so I have read…

Seems like that was sooooo long ago we all read that.

Wonder what ever happened to that guy? He probably had a tear in his eye, from being too impressed with his writing, and mistook said tear for glittering earings…me thinks.

We like those WCC titles

“when are Zag fans going to be more focused on winning and getting to the next level rather than consecutive WCC titles?”

What exactly do you want??

Last time I checked, GU tends to win a few games every year en route to those WCC titles. Quite often GU loses no more games during the season than most teams in the final four.

As for the ‘next level’ — what exactly do you mean? Take a look at every team this side of the Mississippi. Other than Arizona under Lute Olson and UCLA under John Wooden, there are precious few teams that get to the ‘next level’ on a regular basis. Face it. As long as the GU campus is located in Spokane, WA it is not going to be a destination for a lot of kids. Especially if they are expected to actually attend class.

We are, and have been at a very high level for many years now. Maybe folks have gotten way to jaded.

I remember attending the NCAA Men’s pod in Spokane when GU was playing Arizona (2001 IIRC the overtime game that wouldn’t quit) at another location. Rather than watch U-Conn v. someone, there were about 100 odd diehard GU fans out in the hall watching GU on the overhead televisions. I think we made more noise than the rest of the crowd sitting in the Spokane Colosseum.

Like the song says, "Bought her a brand new Ford — she says, “I want a Cadillac”; Bought her a ten dollar dinner — she says thanks for the snack; let her live in my pent house, she calls it a shack; gave her 7 children, and now she wants to give em back!"

There’s no making some people happy.

One of these days we may catch some lighting in the bottle — who knows maybe this year is the year.

Next Level

What exactly do I want? Improvement. MJC – how many years have you been saying “Man, we’re going to good next year!” and the exact same thing happens as the years previous? Probably every year for the last 5-6, huh?

I appreciate your comment and discussing with you, and I agree with you that we’re not going to be a powerhouse, or a destination for 1 and doners. That’s not what I meant by my comments, if it sounded that way, then that’s my fault.

I don’t feel I have gotten jaded, I’m just tired of complacency. I want to see some improvement in how our program is nationally. Is it blashemous to say that the Zags aren’t that great until we do something nationally?

I love Gonzaga, and I think we have one of the best programs in the country, but I would like THE COUNTRY to know that…not just the WCC pee-wees.
