Ryan Spangler up Close
Great video by SWX on Ryan Spangler.
Too bad about his broken finger, we certainly could have used the depth this season.
The injury to his pinkie finger was found to be worse than expected during surgery and he may be out longer than what was originally thought to be 2/3 weeks.
Is it possible to red-shirt him at this point? If not, because of his injury, it seems like a waste of a years eligibility...too bad.

Unfortunate
I think were past the point to RS him…athough this is medical related, im not sure how that works, but if we could RS him I think that would be the best thing, if he comes back too early and re injures his finger than hes done…and he probably wouldnt be in game speed for awhile anyways…

I’m not totally sure but I think it involves the number of games he’s played for an automatic red shirt. I think he’s past that. A medical red shirt requires a petition.

Medical redshirt doesn't look likely
I searched it up as soon as I heard about the broken finger. Found some different explainations. One site listed a lot of restrictions, including how many games they played in (no more than 20%), injury ocurring in the first half of the season, not able to heal in time to get back during the season. But perhpas these ‘rules’ are subject to interpretation. Another site lists a much simpler guideline

this site has it wrong...
their example is fine but their understanding of why he got the Med RS is off. He got it because Cuse had not gotten into the second half of the scheduled season.

He is past the medical redshirt as well...
The medical redshirt waiver can only be granted if the injury happens BEFORE the start of the second half of the scheduled season.
Straight out of the NCAA Rule book:
First-Half-of-Season Calculation.
14.2.4.3.4.1 Team Sports. In team sports, the first half of the season is measured by the number of
scheduled contests or dates of competition not exceeding the maximum limitations in each sport as set
forth in Bylaw 17 as set prior to the first scheduled contest or date of competition of the designated official NCAA championship playing season in the applicable sport or the number of completed contests
or dates of competition. In determining if an injury or illness occurs prior to the first competition of the
second half of the season that concludes with the NCAA championship in a sport with an odd number
of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition, the injury or illness must have occurred
prior to the beginning of the scheduled or completed varsity contest or date of competition that starts
the second half of the season that concludes with the NCAA championship (e.g., an injury or illness
occurring at any time after the beginning of the scheduled sixth game of an 11-game schedule would be
considered to be after the first half of the institution’s season and would not qualify the student-athlete
for a hardship waiver).
For Ryan the broken pinkie would have needed to happen at the latest, the day before the Pepperdine game…on Jan 5th

Welp, that's that then.
Godspeed in the healing process, and hopefully he gets back soon enough to give us some depth, a lil rest for our remaining bigs, and a serviceable body for when they get in foul trouble.
One thing…KO just got that much closer to being called to active duty. Knock on wood!
