How 'bout a little fun?
With league play coming into full swing and as I've seen much criticism of late about the lack of debatable bb posting, I would like to present this potent question to the masses. Perhaps it's been asked before. I haven't see in my 1 1/2 years of reading this blog (maybe I missed it). I guess this would be a fantasy question.....
Q: What would be your all-time GU starting line-up?
Feel free to explain your choices and by all means, have fun!

Do you like this story?

I was thinking about this too the other day, but thought it might be a better topic for the summer doldrums.
Either way, I have a suggested modification: instead of starting 5, what about 8-man rotation?
No debate about it.....basic stuff here.
BEST Zag team of ALL-TIME!
1. David Stockton… he will be better than his father when it’s all said and done, much better.
2. Mark Few…I know, it’s a fantasy of mine but yo, the dude can sink 1/2 courters eyes closed, and his wingspan?….drooling!
3. Sean Mallon…a physical specimen. lightning fast, hops, and HEART!
4. Will Foster…a “glue guy.” Best free throw shooter in Zag history.
5. Mike (Sequim) Hes a briiiick houuuuuuse, a just lettin it all hang out.

Best line up so far.
I was thinking somebody would do something like this:
Goodson
Villarino
Gibbs
Arop
Davis
I have personally made the halfcourt shot throwing over my head from half court looking at the opposite basket
True story, cost one of my players, Buhner type buzz, 1972/1973 station!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Big House!
Thanks, Mickey Joe!
Gaz has a couple of pictures of my……………… Portly physique at Emerald downs with some friends! He thinks I would be a good candidate to join the USA Sumu Wrestling Team!
I barely remember the first two
but from what I remember they were awesome. Nostalgia, maybe?
I'll bite
1 John Stockton
2 Gary Bell Jr. – yeah I have a hunch by the end of his 4 years he might be the 2nd best scorer to come through this program behind the next guy…
3 Adam MF Morrison
4 JP Batista
5 Casey Calvary
a couple other guys who I’d take off the bench:
Ronny Turiaf
Kevin Pangos
Matt Bouldin
Elias Harris
Seems like we did this recently, but who cares, it is always fun!
My team DEFENDS
1. Johnny Utah
2. Micah
3. Errol Knight
4. Ronny
5. Sacre
our offense comes from bench, in form of Jon Rillie and Ammo, GBJ is 8th man!
and of course
Mike Hart would be the defensive specialist just in case we happened to play against Redick or Durant
Replace Dower
With Batista or Heytvelt (at his peak) and you have my vote.
Maybe in the future
but Heytvelt in his prime was clearly better than Dower. On the court, that is.
He gave a good Carolina team major problems
He was definitely headed for success at the next level.
i always hear the Carolina game mentioned
but that’s about it. I guess we’ll agree to disagree, I think Dower is the more talented player
When Dower develops both hands and the ability to dunk on people
I’ll agree with you

I thought
he made a nice move to his left(our right)in the X game. So it looks like he’s been working on adding more shots to his repertoire. I Just remember Hetyvelt being soft, not consistently showing up for games. Dower impresses me with his ability to finish in traffic, which is a breath of fresh air compared to Sacre.
Dower seems to have the sweeter shot and more polished game,
but I don’t get the impression he’s that explosive an athlete (although his length offsets that to some extent); Heytvelt, on the other hand, was a freaking airborne monster beast. Frustratingly inconsistent, though.
This.
With Batista, Daye, Frahm off the bench.
I’d actually be tempted to replace Turiaf with Batista and go all-offense, all the time. That lineup would score 100. And give up like 97.
Mike Hart
I’d way rather have Errol Knight as my defensive specialist than Mike Hart.
Zag fan since 1992.
Mike Nielsen!!!!
Mike Nielsen is the best defender GU ever had

Burgess people, Burgess
Frank Burgess belongs on every list like this. Might well be the best player GU ever had.
mjc
I thought about putting him on
But I have never even seen video of him play!!! He is listed as a SG but he played looooong before there was a 3pt line. So I have no idea what kind of player he really was! Does anybody know if any video exists of him playing? I would really like to see it!
Here are some stills of the great man...
But unfortunately, no video. There is a rather intriging picture of what I assume might be his grandmother…I was taken aback by how loving and kindly she appears, lol.
Final 4 or Bust!!~
Quentin Hall!
Everybody forgets about Q! He was the rock that held the Elite 8 team together!
And as for defensive specialists Mike Hart aint got sh*t on Mike Nielsen!
I will pick players from 1998 and on
I wont pick current players because their career is not over yet.
Dickau
Santangelo
Morrison
Calvary
Turiaf
Stepp
Bouldin
Frahm
Bakari Hendrix
JP Batista
Go Zags !!!!
Hendrix
I feel like I should remember him. Who did he play with?
I know a few players
Some of the guys were John Rillie, Mike Leasure(great defensive player), and I believe Axel Dench.
Hendrix
Was WCC POY in 1998 and had 19.8 ppg and 7.3 reb. He played with Matt Santangelo, Frahm, Hall and Casey. He missed the elite 8 by 1 year. He did not get drafted but payed many years overseas. The Zags went 23-9 that year and played in the NIT.
Go Zags !!!!
KP...
as a Freshman leads the team in most minutes, most points, most assists and handles the ball more than anyone else on the team…..also shoots 44.6% from the field and 41% beyond the arc, leads the team in FT %…..pretty good defender as well….
What Pure Freshman in modern “Zagdom” has come anywhere near this? If there is one, I have not heard of him. Give me KP now over Pargo, Ravio and Dickau….yeah…you heard me.
at this point in time for modern zagdom….as in..Frank Burgess is still all time greatest Zag player based off college career results…but we all have no real frame of reference so I am leaving him out for now…and of course greatest Zag BB player over all to come through the program is John Stockton….to argue with this would just be stupid….with that said…
Santangelo PG
Richie Frahm SG
Adam Morrison SF
Batista C / PF
Calvary C / PF
off the Bench:
Without hesitation: Kevin Pangos PG
Blake Stepp…he was a SG playing point anyway
Micah Downs SF
Cory Violette PF
Turiaf C
both of these lineups would be lethal…IMO
If you don't like my fire then don't come around...
just to help...
here he is YTD vs some Great Zag PG’s freshman year.
If you don't like my fire then don't come around...
I agree! Pango's is a dandy!!!
Freshman Pango’s over senior Dickau any day LOL!
Tweet me @JoeZagFan
Go Team Zag's!!!!
Did you compare...
KP thus far to Dickau’s Senior year? Sort of pointless but still fun… :) Dickau scored more a game but KP’s offensive rating is better….if he can stay on this trend, he will be the best PG GU ever had…..IMO….only time will tell.
If you don't like my fire then don't come around...
just for kicks...
i just compared him to all of those player’s senior year….still impressive…so far of course.
If you don't like my fire then don't come around...
what a great find
thanks matty. i was at gu during the santangelo days. if pangos can put up numbers with (and surpass) this list, we’re in for a serious baller. looking forward to watching him for 3 more years.
here it is fellas
1. John Stockton
2. Mike Nilson( pretty much only cause he is my landlord)
3. Adam Morrison
4.Austin Daye
5.Casey Calvery
Bench
Micah Downs
Matt Santangelo
Dan Dickau
Josh Heytfelt(when he wasnt bad)
