Gonzaga and Washington State to begin ESPN's Fourth Annual Tip-Off Marathon
For the past few weeks, Will has been providing up to the minute updates on Gonzaga's 2011-12 schedule. The schedule features some outstanding matchups and exposure for the program. Today, ESPN announced that Gonzaga and Washington State's annual nonconference battle will begin the festivities that is their 24 hour Tip-Off Marathon. The game will tip at midnight eastern so for 95% of Gonzaga fans, it will land in the 9 PM slot we are all used to.
The marathon, which will televise 19 consecutive games (11 on ESPN), has become the official 'start' of college basketball, which unlike college football, has always struggled to grab national attention right from the beginning of the season. ESPN did a very nice job of grabbing some intriguing matchups for the tip-off. The lineup includes: San Diego St. & Baylor, Duke v. Michigan State, Florida v. Ohio Sate, Kentucky v. Kansas, and top-tier programs like Memphis, Texas, Cal, Stanford, and Syracuse will also be represeneted.
For more on the event, take a look at ESPN's official press release
UPDATE: According to the Tulsa World, Oral Roberts has been added to the schedule. The Zags will take on ORU on December 15th in Spokane.

We can all agree
Both GU and WSU fans will get to see the entire game.
Unlike the other scheduled games, at least we don’t have to worry about the prior game going into triple overtime.
I’m happy — very happy!

Great News!
So, who needs a pre season tourney when we are going to be spot lighted as the season opening act on ESPN!
Heck of a deal. Absolutely fantastic news!

I'll prep the coffee...
It looks like that will be a late night for me on the east coast. After such a long off-season, I’m not going to complain.

Ohhhh, we owe them,,,
they beat us up, down, and all around last year,,couldn’t handle their physical play, or intensity, imo.
Great way to show this is a different year, i hope
No worrries
That beat down was early, when we were just learning to walk. It doubt they can stay in the bldg with us this year.
Did Clay Thompson go pro? check
Did that other guy from Ferris TRY to go pro and got dissed? DeAngelo CastroOil? check
I like the Cougs. It’s just that when they play the Zags, I HATE them. Otherwise I luv em!

we couldn't hit open shots that game
WSU stood in a zone and watched us miss shots all night. I’d say we handled their style of play just fine, if we didn’t start 0-8 or 0-9 from the field we probably play a tight game and win.
Welcome to the Sound Pound...
yeah....
I think we were breathing the chronic off the coug jockstaps that night!

Sounder, I didn't reply at first, what's the point in debating HOW we got our arses
kicked?
Finally though, I can’t resist…. did you and I watch the same game? I remember Clay and Lodwick, either ripping balls right out of our hands, our bodying us out of position. I remember Castro, tomahawking on the entire teams’ head, with no opposition..I remember we had a “deer in the headlights” look the entire game, couldn’t believe it was as close as it was.
Simply calling it a cold shooting night, misses the point, imo.
We didn’t put it together, imo until the loss to Notre Dame; even after that, we were inconsistent.
My great hope is that Few learned from his worst year, and we have a set identity, and rotation, much earlier this year.
Looking Forward to Butler
New poster, long time reader. Here in NW Florida, we have friend who went to Butler, he a player in the late 50’s and she a cheerleader same time. We are getting together for a great time 20 Dec! ORU should be a nice warm up.
Nice to finally "hear" from ya.
Stick around. Getting ready to throw up an exclusive with Marquise Carter. Had been waiting to hear back from Zach or Max about a question I posed to them in the “official” email that is supposed to get to them, but looks like they never read from there anymore? So, instead of waiting any longer, I’m just gonna let er rip.

How does Romar consitently out recruit Few? WIth all of their baggage? I dont’ get it.
So we won't get kids from LA?
Donny Daniels was supposed to change that mentality among recruits. Apparently he has failed.
Life is not about absolutes
Geeze what are you some kind of corporate quarterly analyst? Contrary to what many politicians think these days (not picking on any party here). There are no simple fixes and there is no ‘magic’.
As we often said where I grew up, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.”
Face it, teenagers (with very few exceptions) are flakes. They lack life experience and easily have their heads turned by the least little immediate distraction.
Daniels has contacts in CA. This gives him information and access to kids in that neck of the woods where maybe we would not normally have that kind of access.
Beyond that, the kid’s decision to attend Gonzaga will probably be more influenced by his parents and buddies than a coach from Eastern Washington.
Gonzaga has made large strides in the past 10 years but if you break it down, those large strides are really a bunch of baby steps. That my friend is how it is done here. Baby steps. One player here, one league championship there, another NCAA tournament appearance, more TV exposure, more ESPN talk, etc. It all adds up.
I know this is the season to carp about recruiting. IMO we will never have Mickey D players lining up to attend GU. I say it over and over again. Kids come to GU because they want to be here — no other reason. All we can possibly do is try to educate potential recruits about all the good things at GU.
Speaking of, how many potential recruits have you talked to about GU? EVER? It doesn’t have to be a coach that recruits these kids you know.
Where Daniels is concerned I am looking to the progress and production of our big guys. He’s only been here a year or so but if Dower and Sacre are any indication of things to come, I couldn’t be more happy with the coaching staff.
You can carp about KO’s progress but there I think we have a player that is seeking an identity. KO has a game best suited for a 3 and a frame that is not the best for the 5 position. That said, his struggles on the defensive end of things have limited his playing time. The guy can score when he gets in the game. Will be interesting to see if KO is playing inside more this year or if he continues to favor the perimeter.
Go Zags!

KO as a 3?
How is KO’s game suited for the 3? Really? He is SLOOOOOOOOOOWWW. He is not athletic. He cannot defend quick players. He is an average shooter (look at his numbers). He is NOT a 3. I really get tired of all the “7 footer with guard skills” or “matchup nightmare” stuff. He is a really tall guy. So far that is about it. He needs to be a PF. Stay near the basket and rebound. He will get his points. He doesn’t help the team when he thinks he’s Nowitski.
I really hope he improves and makes a fool out of me.
I still believe Daniels has been a bust so far. My UCLA buddy says he was never a good recruiter and a lot of the kids he signed ended up transferring. I know Drew Gordon (San Jose) transferred, but who else?
UNLV has signed top 50 players. Arizona just signed a Top 10 player. UW got Wroten and many more top 50 types are interested. Oregon has top 100 visits.
We have a much better RECORD than those schools and we don’t sniff players they get.
Is it just the Spokane thing? What about Laurence, Kansas or Eugene, OR. Not exactly cosmopolitan areas.

Can't speak for UW or UCLA...
But have you seen the girls that go to Oregon? My lord in heaven! :) If I was 18 and I visited that campus….sign me up! lol
If you don't like my fire then don't come around...
Facilities are to die for
Eugene OR has all the NIke money it will ever need. Incredible campus. The town is a very different place too. Something outa the 60’s. Open air markets withing walking distance of the campus, weekly protests, and everything is always green, green, green.
