From Espn Rumors, seems everyone is seeing a lull in our recruiting

We noted recently that Skylar Spencer had cut his list of finalists to four -- a list in which Gonzaga was conspicuously absent. A few months ago, it seemed the Bulldogs would be in the race to land a Spencer-commitment to the very end, so the fact Gonzaga was not included was a definite surprise.

So where does Gonzaga turn to now, in terms of recruiting? The Bulldogs were able to bring in a very talented 2011 class, and it's not clear whether each of the members will take the court next season -- perhaps some will redshirt. However, in terms of GU's 2012 class, the situation is dim -- both Richard Longrus and Zena Edosomwan haven't been connected to Gonzaga in months, and early target Demarquise Johnson seems to have moved on.

Of course, Gonzaga could always return to their highly successful European and Canadian pipeline -- assistant Tommy Lloyd is one of the best at identifying prospects in far-flung places. However, at the moment, it would appear that Gonzaga's 2012 recruiting efforts are stuck.

AHHH!

Im getting sick of all this negative crap! something positive…..quick! In my mind I like to tell myself the staff has a plan and has moved in another direction for the recruiting class….maybe extending into the 2013 class. I dont want to think that we are losing out on several recruits…Gonzaga is a great place to play basketball…period. There has got to be a few of those guys that would love to have the opportunity…its a privelage to play @ GU (atleast in my mind).

I like to think the staff is hard @ work and has some connections brewing…I hope so.

Demarquise...

It states in this article that Demarquise has moved on..he does have a visit to GU on Sept 15…so I wonder if there is an update on his recruiting??

This guy doesn't know butt from apple butter.

He’s probably just some guy who needed to write about something to fill up his column. He has not told us anything new. And he has messed up on Demarquise.

That Canadian pipeline he is talking about

may have sprung a serious leak w/ all the Canadian failures. Bol, Arop, and KO perthaps not to happy being asked to red shirt behind an unproven Spangler….seems like I am missing someone?

IF we were hot on Wiggens or Bennett ALL would be forgiven….but I doubt that is even remotely possible.

But here’s your positvie Scotten49…We got a great team playing GU ball THIS SEASON.

Maybe we’re just ALL IN for 2011. And besides, wasn’t the world ending on Dec 21st anyways?…lol

I didnt' think Duane was considered that good....

They are many other canadians more highly regarded.

Here is the top 10 2012 recruits per northpolehoops.com

Rank Player Name Pos School Division
1 Anthony Bennett SF
2 Nick Stauskas SG
3 Dyshawn Pierre SF
4 Sim Bhullar C
5 Olivier Hanlan PG
6 Junior Lomomba SG
7 Naz Long PG
8 Braxston Bunce C
9 Negus Webster-Chan
10 Jonathan Tshibuy

Duane Notice is #7 in the 2013 class.
Maybe you are thinking Dyshawn Pierre? I love his game. best player on the canadian team at the junior worlds this year – which pangos played in.

by Mojo J on Aug 23, 2011 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Bhullar is committed to Xavier and Stauskus is committed to Michigan – I believe the rest are uncommitted.

by Mojo J on Aug 23, 2011 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Kevin Pangos considers him very good

And he is a really good friend of his. He may not be the best Canadian available, but he might be the best we can get {with hopefully, Pangos help}.

1. Bennett
2. Wiggens
3. Notice

I would rather have them in that order. and since the first two are HIGHLY unlikely, I’d still be very happy to land Notice, who is still a top recruit. A #7 recruit is nothing to shake a stick at.

I don't exactly agree with the "highly successful european and canadian pipeline"

so far the only one to me that has stood out has been elias…. that’s it.

I don't hate many things, but i do hate Boise State.

Ummm Sacre is Canadian....

Agreed that if Gonz keeps failing to develop some of these Canadian recruits they are going to start going else where…

by Mojo J on Aug 23, 2011 8:18 PM PDT up reply actions

sooooo....as of this comment....

Spencer is out, Edowsomwan is out….and D. Johnson seems to have moved on…though not sure on that one…

now this TSSF tweet:

Scratch another 2012 prospect off the list. Per @JoshGershon of Scout.com, Richard Longrus is considering WSU, Colorado, & Stanford.

So now we are down to Tyron Wallace…another PG and some Polish kid….who seems to move with the speed of a banana slug….(may have to consider the new mascot if we land him)

wowza….looking bleak…then again the staff may have some ace in the hole????

If you don't like my fire then don't come around...

by mattydog73 on Aug 23, 2011 2:32 PM PDT reply actions

Another one bites the dust...

I dont want the Polish Monster..he seems so unathletic and very slow…

There wasn’t much discussion about Longrus..I figured he was looking elsewhere

I like Wallace but we are pretty deep in that position. I really hope we can land Demarquise.

The staff must have a plan, and something else brewing..I cant seem to beleive that we would go this long without any real discussion on potential recruits.

It is obvious we are taking a pass

on the 2012 class as we really do not need anyone. The coaches have it all sorted out. Right guys?….. guys?

We are fine, loaded

Stacked at all positions but Center. Bobby moves on, Dower, KO man the C spot and we recruit hard for one in 2013.

The wing is a bit of a question mark, but if Guy proves solid and MK and MM improve, we’re pretty good there too.

More than likely these recruits realized they weren’t going to see many minutes as freshman and decided to look elsewhere.

Not worried at all.

by cjm720 on Aug 24, 2011 12:12 PM PDT reply actions

Agree

the recruits were going after are highly touted; With that they want to play soon.
Katin- would have been competing with GB,KP
Spencer- against Spangler,KO

-Our PG situation is good as well as SG the next cpl years. The 3 position MM,Landry,Keita…I would love to add Demarquise here, possibly Dranginis here in the future.
- At the 4..Spangler, KO, perhaps Dower when needed

Our biggest need will be at the center position, and the 3 coming into 2013, perhaps a PF because most likely Haris will be out of here…Hoping that Spangler will be a stud at the 4 for years to come.

Ultimately we look solid. 2013 will be a crucial recruiting period for the Zags though.

So we go all in for 2013, huh?

Sounds OK, but it does make me rather nervous. Why put off til tommorow what you can accomplish today?

The picture you guys just painted above has a real rosey color to it as some of the players are untested as of yet, and we know how that can turn out. see: Poling, GG, Villarino, Bol Kong, et al.

what other choices do we have..

As of right now what are the options…maybe the coaches are tired of all these transfers to. Be confident in the players we have, they were recruited for a reason, develop them.

I really liked Bol..wish he stayed he could have made a real impact.

I would rather go into next season with this team then try to force recruits that won’t pan out in the long run…we have over recruited in positions or were quick to pull the trigger on recruits more recently in the past and it hasn’t worked. Yeah its a gamble to wait on recruits, but probably smart. Saying that, if we get the opportunity to pull a recruit that makes sense and is high caliber, then lets do it, but lets not recruit a guy that we are not super high on just to fill a void if it can wait…of course this is JMO…now lets go get Anthony Bennett!

Dont get the hopes up on Bennett. He listed his top 10 and no Gonzaga to be found…

by Mojo J on Aug 24, 2011 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I know

But trust me….I spoke to Kevin personally, and he assures me he is trying his best to get him to come for a visit. They are really good friends…The coaches are also pushing him to work on Bennett.

Is there a chance? Not much….but anythings possible.

Ask him about Dyshawn Pierre!

He was awesome on the Canadian JMNT this summer. Pangos has to know him well.

Goes under the radar a bit as he plays on the same AAU (CIA Bounce) as Bennett who typically overshadows him as a powerful SF/PF.

I don’t think he is overly recruited and I think will be a serious player in the NCAA.

Sorry to say but Bennett is going to a high major program no doubt about it. However you do never know – I think he is waiting out the recruitment process cuz he wants to play the SF position to help his NBA chances.

by Mojo J on Aug 24, 2011 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't turn the nose up on the Canadian by the way

no matter what has happened in the past with Canadian flameouts at Gonzaga, we are just seeing the early stage of a golden crop coming through.
There are some solid players hitting the NCAA in in 2012, 13 an 14.
Bennett and Wiggins may be the best of them by keep an eye on some of the less known guys like Pierre (12), Negus Webster-Chan (12), Olivier Hanlan (12), Xavier Rathan-Mayes (13), Tyler Ennis (13), Isaiah Watkins (13), Trey Lyles (14), Kevin Zabo (14).
Those 13’s and 14’s will not be under the radar for long.

by Mojo J on Aug 24, 2011 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Also..

Reports are that Sim Bhullar decomitted from Xavier for reasons for acceptance into that school…he has now decided to go play for New Mexico State.

Everything you are saying makes sense

My anguish is this though: It seems like excuses are being made that try to justify what appears to be a major FLOP so far recruiting the 2012 class. If we were so set, and ok with developing what we have because we are so loaded, why did we try to land anyone? And we most certainly did….and failed. I like to be as positive as the next guy, and I appreciate your positive view, but it does not feel like reality.

Other teams that we should aspire to recruit like {Duke, Kansas, N.C., Syracuse} over recruit ALL THE TIME. They do not rest on their laurels and stop recruiting because they are afraid someone might get upset and transfer. They go after top notch recruits constantly, and if you are good enough, you work your way up the food chain for playing time.

Now sure, we aint Doookies, but it appears we are stuck in between becoming a butterfly or remaining a moth, somethings gotta give.

Are ya feelin me bro? I do like your positive spin though. Now I will feel bad all night for saying this and being negative but…. I do not like it that every single recruit on SSFs board is dissing us.

We have a ways to go

to be a Duke, Kansas etc. Those teams can get multiple all-americans each year. We’ve had one due to transfer in our (modern) history.

We took a shot at some good players and didn’t land them. Move on, don’t force things by taking lower level players. Let’s go on a run this year and have that be a major recruiting force.

by cjm720 on Aug 26, 2011 7:59 AM PDT up reply actions

OK then...

move on, we failed, we aint Dookie, lets earn it by winning with scrubs, THEN we will be able to hang w/ the NCs and pack em in.

And that’s all we can do. We MUST find a way to get a final 4 so it helps us move closer into pole position on the recruiting line. But, even a final 4 will not get us a steller all american class year after year.

Maybe all this winning and success has spoiled me, lol. Because I know I WANT MORE!

I hear ya

I completely agree with you that we are stuck in between as far as recruiting..we cant compete with the Dukes and Kentucky’s yet..but thats where the direction of the staff is headed..unfortunately it has burned us thus far. I think alot depends on KO…I wish I could be a fly on the wall during all the conversations amongst the coaching staff.

I still have a hard time beleiving that we didnt make a top few in any of the last few recruits we were going after unless the coaching staff cooled down a bit..idk, I just cant seem to except that yet; especially the Spencer situation.

I really hope we dont burn our bridge with the canadian pipeline…there is some talent there..obviously, and we usually seem to be the program that can land them, but even thats getting more competitive.

One issue to think about

Is that most of your Canadians are west coast guys. KO, Sacre and Bol Kong for sure. Not sure of Arop. Most of those guys are not too connected with the Toronto guys, which is where the best Canadians are coming from right now. West Coast and Eastern Canadians have as much in common as West Coast and East Coast Americans.

Pangos is from and plugged into the Toronto area so that may help allot.
