Questions for Max and the rest of our Gonzaga reporters.

i have a few things i would like to get answers to and i hope you or other fans can help.

1. David Stockton and Mike Hart got scholarships last season because we had open scholarships. This year we have one open and what will become of it?

2. Is Kelly Olynyk going to redshirt?

3. Rumor has it we have a new recruit coming but no name yet.

4. We all know GBJ, KD, RS, KP and the kid from G-Prep and the JC transfer are coming to Gonzaga. But could we now replace that with the 2012 class we are recruiting?

5. And if you can fill in the blanks on the schedule for the 2011-2012 season.

Western Michigan

Michigan St

Oklahoma St

Xavier

Notre Dame

Baylor

New Mexico

Butler

Illinois

WSU

Arizona

EWU

BYU x 2

Saint Marys x 2

San Diego x 2

Santa Clara x 2

Pepperdine x 2

LMU x 2

San Francisco x 2

Portland x 2

That is 28 games, so we are missing about 3-5 games

Thanks for what you do on this site, so if you have the answers that would be great.

Don't understand...

why would you want to redshirt Kelly. He is already more agile than Sacre. He just has to be taught by Daniels or others to get his butt in the post and stay there to board, block and score—and do it with more authority and confidence. I’m not sure I’m ready to play senioritis and award the starting post position to Sacre, when both Dower and Kelly, are legitimate candidates providing Dower learns to play both ends of the floor and Kelly loses his deer in the headlights personna.

by fungor on Jul 14, 2011 2:25 PM PDT reply actions

Sacre?

Dude, Sacre is a guaranteed lock at the center position. An elite defender and free-throw shooter that has improved on every aspect of his game over the course of his career. He will likely be team captain too.

by cjm720 on Jul 14, 2011 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Never said that.

I never said i wanted KO to redshirt. I sked if he was going to redshirt because of some rumors i have read. But to be honest i think Sacre will get 30 min this year and Harris will get 30 min and Dower wil get 20 min. So that eats up all the minures for the 4 and 5 positions. Unless you think Harris is going to play the 3 this year.

by ZagaZags on Jul 14, 2011 3:08 PM PDT reply actions

Is he injured or something?

Because that’s the only way I see him redshirting.

by CLT_ZagsFan on Jul 14, 2011 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Not injured

I think the idea was that he grew so fast it might take some time for him to deal with being a 7 footer now. Remember he was a PG in HS. The other thought is that he might not get as many minutes as he would like this year. So if he redshirts he will have alot of minutes his last 2 years of BB. Rob Sacre had a redshirt and we will see the benefits this year because of that. True he got hurt his soph. year but we would not have him for the 2011-2012 season W/O that redshirt.

by ZagaZags on Jul 14, 2011 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't see it

For starters, it would be a big insult and I would see him transferring before taking a “get better” rs year.

Plus, I think he’ll get plenty of minutes at the 4 (maybe a bit of 3), which is his natural position.

by CLT_ZagsFan on Jul 14, 2011 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Olynyk will get plenty of minutes at the 4 and some at the 3........

So should Harris not play 30 min? should Dower get less than 20 min? Sacre not get 30 min as well? could you define plenty of minutes? And if you think he is going to play the 3 we may have the tallest 3 in the NCAA. but im sure he can defend the smaller more athletic 3s in the country.
Harris had a hard time at the 3 last year but that could be because of the injury.
I am all for Olynyk playing this year and never said he should redshirt but i dont see who you take playing time from. Sacre? Dower? Harris? i dont think so

by ZagaZags on Jul 15, 2011 2:10 AM PDT up reply actions

It's not a question of "should"

Foul trouble, matchup issues (or wanting to go ‘big’), injuries, etc. will create minutes for him. He’s a backup PF. You do believe in having backups, right?

by CLT_ZagsFan on Jul 15, 2011 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions

I am all for back ups

And i want KO to play this year. But i also think it would be cool to have him for the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons. I only asked about KO taking a season off because it has been talked about before. So Spangler will be a redshirt for sure. there is only 200 minutes in a game for 13 players and players 10-13 wont see many minutes.

by ZagaZags on Jul 15, 2011 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Excuses

How many times have I read that KO is “growing into his body” or he is “getting used to his body”? He has been 7’ since he got to GU and he has done little. He is not a good post player because he is soft. And he is an OK shooter (not great). He is just not a basketball player. He is not aggressive and doesn’t show a passion for the game (see Harris, Sacre, Hart, etc.). His worst flaw is that he has ZERO quickness or speed. That is what will ultmately dispel any idea of an NBA career.

And I have never seen a junior redshirt. It would be kind of a slap in the face.

by SanJoseZag on Jul 21, 2011 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Just not a basketball player?

You must not have seen him play in the FIBA games, he schooled Boris Diaw (a pretty good player) on the baseline.

He’s not ‘great’, but your hyperbole is completely ridiculous.

by CLT_ZagsFan on Jul 22, 2011 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions

KO redshirt - Just an opinion

One of the only reasons that KO might redshirt would be to have more playing time the last 2 years. I do not think that anyone expected Harris to come back. This would mean the KO could possibly get his masters (paid by basketball), build his body up next year, improve his inside game next year and then show off the next 2 years.

by zag67 on Jul 16, 2011 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Dont think so...

If this Is the case for playing time for KO I see him leaving….If he were to redshirt he will get lost in the midst of recruits…I dont see him being to eager to do this…

I see great flashes and potential in KO game..a big man who has the ability to get out on the perimeter and hit big shots, pretty scary If he can get his game intact.

If he was to agree with RS he could be a scary player the following years..I just dont see It happening.

Look at his resume

He’s played significant minutes in his first two years (including last year with the same lineup of bigs). He had some pretty impressive flashes in the FIBA World Games, and has only really been hindered by his own lack of aggressiveness.

Take a guy like that and suggest he take a year off and you a) hurt his pride and confidence to a level he may not come back from; b) risk him transferring (which would obviously be terrible); and c) create a situation where you have just three bigs.

by CLT_ZagsFan on Jul 16, 2011 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know

maybe it would be best for Kelly in the long run. Aside from his pride, and the fear of getting washed out in over recruiting, IF he did this he definately has the potential of getting much more PT.

I say roll the dice and sit a year. But that’s just me….the REDSHIRT EVERYBODY GUY, lol.

Stockton?

Why doesn’t his dad just pay for college and open up a scholarship?

by boudges@gmail.com on Jul 14, 2011 3:49 PM PDT reply actions

DS

is not occupying a scholarship…he was a walk on and the coach rewarded him and Mike Hart with the open ones for the year. that is all.

If you don't like my fire then don't come around...

Thanks Zach

I know Kreklow was on campus a few weeks ago, anyone know how that went?

Oh WOW!!!

The blogger who wrote the following comment,

“Stockton?
Why doesn’t his dad just pay for college and open up a scholarship?”

must not know anything about Gonzaga basketball and most certainly knows nothing about the Stocktons…THEY EARN THEIR WAY!

I can’t believe someone would discredit Gonzaga, John or David in such a way!

I feel sad for you!!!

by Teacher56 on Jul 14, 2011 5:10 PM PDT reply actions

You're totally misreading his point.

Do the math: if Stocks Sr. just ponied up the $$ for David to attend and walk-on (as he’s been doing, I presume), and thus a scholly wasn’t used on David, then a scholarship could be used on someone else.

Which part is discrediting: that a former NBA player would pay for his kid, that Baby Stocks might not be a no-brainer scholarship player (given that he’s been a walk-on thus far), or that subtracting a scholarship opens up a scholarship?

by Hoft on Jul 14, 2011 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions

@Teacher56

Slow down… Take a deep breath. Just a thought many people have brought up other than me. I’m sorry you have to see it on paper for the first time.

My thoughts are with Hoft. I was fan of David last season as he surprised us all with his stability at the point. With this said, I still don’t think he’s the guard that takes us to the final four. Maybe he can surprise us all again by taking his game to the next level, and if he did I would be the happiest fan of all. If David reads this, I hope he would take it as motivation to prove that he is really worth the scholarship.

In my opinion, we had all the pieces last year to have a great team, minus the point guard position. That being the most important position in college basketball, our team struggled at times. David came in and gave us some stability, but even David struggled with ball pressure against more athletic teams. Once Few finally instilled some trust into Carter, which he should have done way earlier in the season has he had valuable junior college playing experience, our team started taking it to its potential level. This next level was reached with Carter stepping up to his talents, with some side help of Stockton showing some poise.

With that said, we have some great point guards with high ceilings as far as talent. My opinion of Stockton to be a walk on would only help our team.

Please don’t discredit my knowledge of GU basketball. I’m not on here to attack any other GU fan, just to have healthy discussions.

Hoft & boudges

I DO see your point and it is liget. Yes it would make room for another quality player. It makes good sense.
I have reread and its just that I don’t like John Stockton being discredited. I can see that isn’t what you mean to do.
My apologies

by Teacher56 on Jul 14, 2011 5:55 PM PDT reply actions

david stockton

I think we are all aware of Stockton’s tragic flaw last year—the inability to worm his way out of a midcourt double team. I’m sure his dad is working with him on that. Either pass it, dribble it or, most creatively, force the defender into fouling. The elder Stockton was a master at the latter—and I expect to see some of that passed on to Stocks the Younger this coming season.

by fungor on Jul 15, 2011 4:03 PM PDT reply actions

spot on

If Stock figures that out, and add a juke move or two off a dribble, and he’ll be markedly better. I’m really looking forward to seeing him blossom.

As far as KO, don’t see a RS happening.

Sorry for the late response

1) I wouldn’t expect many changes in the scholarship situation….if Kreklow arrives, which I haven’t heard much on lately, that would alter the situation.

2) It would make sense for Kelly to redshirt, but it is all speculation at this point. If he shows he should play in September and October, I would be stunned if he ended up redshirting.

3) Kreklow visited…haven’t heard much on any updates with him, but I wouldn’t give up a spot for him for the 2012 recruits.

4) Zach handled it

5) Schedule hasn’t been finalized yet…we will have a full breakdown when it is released

Kreklow?

Is that Karnowski’s nickname or something?

by CLT_ZagsFan on Jul 22, 2011 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Ricky Kreklow

Is the transfer from MIssouri who recently visited GU.

Karnowski is the 250 lb.7 foot Pole. He looks oddly similiar to Kelly Olynyk in the pic Zach or Max put up in the SSFs Recruiting Big Board. Imagine two 7 footers that look like twins. KO & Karnowski….interesting if it happens. If it did, hope Karnowski is faster than K.O. is.

"Am I missing something?"

I think you feel like most of us. Seems like some BIGS would be the missing ingredient in this recipe going forward, as I opined in my recent Fanshot: Is Former Missouri Guard Ricky Kreklow Coming to Gonzaga? “This is mind boggling to me. Don’t we have enough guards already? Sure, he is a great shooter, but I was thinking a couple of BIGS would fill out the grocery list just a tad better? What the hay, let’s just run 5 guard sets”.

Coach Few must have, guards on the brain itis.

Ricky Kreklow

Kreklow is 6’6" and would play the 3/SF position. He was Mr. Basket Ball 2010 his Sr. year in Missouri. Most people who saw him practice with the Zags during his visit said " Who is this guy and where did he come from?" From what i hear he looked really good.

by ZagaZags on Jul 23, 2011 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Sure, he looks good and is apparently very talented

just concerned that with only so many roster spots we fill all of them up w/ guards. How many can we jam the roster up with before it bites us because we are short on bigs?

But hey….he IS another Mr Basketball award winner. Sounds kinda neat. Bell-Washington, Draino- Idaho, Spangler-Oklahoma, all Mr Basketball winners and add in Kreklow-MIssouri we have a monopoly going. Sweet!

Great that the Zags are recruiting at such a high level, but we still have a ways to go before we can compete with say, Kentucky, who’s bottom feeder add on for this year is Kyle Wiltjer. Sorry, got off base. Back to the thread.
