Red-shirt Everyone, Dammit!
You heard me...I said red-shirt EVERYONE.
Now, before everyone says I am flying with the geese {the BYU game will do that to you}, Please hear me out.
Many think that the cornerstone of our program's success was laid partially and in principle, by doing exactly that. Knowing he was taking a huge risk, and that the Zags would be terrible initially, Athletic Director Dan Fitzgerald did it anyways.
In 1989 A.D. Dan Fitzgerald told Coach Dan Monson "I am the A.D. and I aint firing me". So he red-shirted 6 players. He felt that the rewards would eventually far outweigh the risks, and they did. These red-shirted players would go on to receive full scholarships, create a legacy by going 14-14 in 1991 {there have been nothing but winning seasons ever since}, win 61 games in three years, and barely lose in the NIT to Kansas State. The bar was set higher at Gonzaga and a new culture was established because of a gutsy call by Fitzgerald.
OK, the history lesson is over. This drastic red-shirting of so many players in one class worked in our past and helped lay the groundwork for where we are today. Reaching the NCAA Tournament 13 consecutive times, 11 consecutive WCC League Titles, 5 sweet 16s, and one Elite 8 is a spectacular accomplishment but it is time to set the bar a little higher.
We need to get to the Final 4 and perhaps the best way to accomplish that is to red-shirt our entire class coming in for 2011/2012. It may seem a bit radical, but it has worked before.
Please follow my madness after the jump:
OK, We need to get past this same ol same ol and win a National title, with perhaps a Final 4 coming first. We have a very nice core coming back for next year. We only lose Steven Gray and should do as well as this year, without using up a year of eligibility to our prized class coming in, and perhaps a smidgen better. Hey, I'll take anything better than this year, which was pretty good. But after next year my plan can get us what we all desire, a spot in the Final 4 and a chance at a National Championship!
Here is the game plan:
RED-SHIRT:
Gary Bell Jr.- Yes, Few told him he would put the ball in his hands. He will. Just hold your horses, wait one year.
Kyle Dranginis- He needs to get stronger and faster. An extra year in the gym is needed.
Ryan Spangler- same as above.
Kevin Pangos- he wanted to red-shirt initially. He gets his wish! Besides, he excelled in Canada, he needs it.
Chris Sarbaugh- could really use a red-shirt year to develop!
Everyone of these players would be able to work on developing needed skills, get faster, stronger, learn our system, get comfy with the campus and classes, develop camaraderie, and practice, practice, practice.
They would buy into the TEAM concept. No arguing and whining about playing time because roles would be understood. It would immediately help with the logjam of who is coming in and where do they play and get minutes. This will take care of the concern about players transferring because they were upset with lack of playing time. Zero transfers would be needed this way.
The coaches can explain to the new group about how well this will work for them and use Robert Sacre, Sam Dower, and David Stockton as prime examples. It has worked very well for them indeed!
I know it all sounds nuts, and perhaps it is. But, I am so sick of getting schooled in the Big Show that I am willing to give it a whirl. Will it happen...nope. But we could do it...why not?
I can see the headlines now: Gonzaga red-shirts everyone, wins National Title!

Why redshirt GBJ?
Sounds like he is ready, and we need to replace Steven. Otherwise, I don’t think any of the other guys need to waste a year of eligibility.
Welcome to the Sound Pound...
If Gary Bell can be good for Gonzaga for {4} years...
Why not 5? How much better as a potential 5th year senior can he be than a regular, plain ol 4 year senior?
This would be Sacre’s last year…but we get one more. How cool is that?
Just saying that if 4 years of Bell is good, than 5 should be even better. We don’t have to go all in like Fitz did….but I have tossed the possibility around.
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
Almost agree
I like your thinking i’ve thought the same except for Gary Bell, I think he can play and get good minutes as a Freshmen (maybe even start if he’s as good as advertised) If everyone is back(no transfers or early departures to NBA or Europe) Except Steven Gray. I think it would be great to see 4 redshirts, ( and I know the players have to agree as well) and then that should create a gap between players and hopefully stop the damn transferring, because im kind of getting tired of it.(I thought Keita should have redshirted this year but oh well) Heres my thought
1.)Gary Bell- play him he will fit into the rotation fine.
2.)Kevin Pangos- redshirt, give him time to develop, plus we are 2 or 3 deep in that spot. Meech,Stockton, Maybe Carter if need be.
3.)Drainginis- redshirt, give him time as well, plus we are deep at the 3 which I think he will be at. Moonighoff, Arop, Hart, Maybe a little Harris Maybe Kieta. (if we went with a smaller lineup)
4.)Ryan Spangler- redshirt, get used to better players ,and if Harris plays the 4 He would be then behind Sacre, Harris, Olynyk, Dower.
5.)Chris Sarbough- I dont really have high hopes for him right away im sure he will be a good teammate and practice player though for now. Hopefully he gets playing time in a couple years.
Im sure it wont work like this and there will probably be a log jam at the end of next year and we will be talking about whose going to transfer again, hope not I looks bad on the team the coaches and also the player it seems to be happening alot around here the last few years, and its happening alot around all of college B-ball. Players just dont want to wait anymore, or the coaches tell them something and dont follow through with it.
thanks for reading my thoughts.
What do you think.

Your thoughts...exactly the type of thinking I was trying to inspire
I like them all except I am stuck wondering one thing…IF Fitz was still alive today {RIP}, would he use Bell now? Or go ALL IN…as he did once before.
I am personally torn about him as well. It is nice to dream though.
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
just what I was thinking
Let Bell play even start the kid, he is going to be great! If no one leaves then red-shirt the rest. They could all use a year to develope and get ready for D-1 ball.

Uh oh gaz!
I’m for it…………….but it won’t happen. 4 of the 5 would be OK and I see your point! I don’t think this incoming class should be waisted trying to bridge the gap from the poor defensive play of this current group of players. The 5 worst defensive players are in the post and on the wing and will account for lots of minutes next year! GU will have to outscore by bunches, maybe average in the mid 80’s to get back to the dance with the way they play “D”. It will cost young players precious minutes on the bench because of the need to play, E, Rob, KO, MM, MK, Manny(if he’s back), and Sam. Since Coach is so adamant about playing Mike Hart, I don’t expect that to change.
I agree with you. However, I would just as soon make Meech, MC and DS suffer on the bench and start GB, KP, Rob, Sam and E. Redshirt RS and KD. Let the 3 guards on the bench fight for time, KO first off for Sam or Rob and unless MM and MK get a WHOLE lot better, be mop up with Hart, or Manny whom I think will transfer. Wishful thinking, yes.
This is a fairly talented team but an ugly group chemestry wise and it won’t get better the way it is now, JMO. One more thing…………..I really lie Mike Harts hustle but 8-15 minutes a game? Where would he fit in say at……………WSU?
One more thought before the big operation!
Been reading about my Alma Mater, WSU’s pot problems. I know some of you could care less but to me, one thing Mark Few and his staff has always tried to do is recruit character….hopefully with some talent for GU’s program. Now I can’t speak for these young men coming in but I can give an opinion.
I would be shocked! Totally shocked! If any of these 5 young men coming in step in the same +*#x, that Reggie, Klay and DC have during their tenure at GU. Sometimes we don’t get the best players but we do get the best charactered young men in the NCAA bar none.
Just thought that should be said.
Yes indeedy
Few is huge on family values, morals, and character. I am so proud to be a fan of such a fine coaching staff and institution. We give people a second chance if they screw up. But there is not much chance of the screwing up in the first place because of the type of player the staff goes after.
There was a time that I wished Gonzaga landed DeAngelo Casto…..not anymore.
- What operation??
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
GBJ
Kinda been echoed already but I think GBJ will be the best guard on our entire roster next year…why redshirt him?
Also, look at the teams who win the national title, a lot of those teams have players who leave after one or two years for the NBA. What kind of message does that send to top 50 recruits who are considering GU if they know there’s a chance they could redshirt their first year and be one more year away from the big bucks?
"GBJ...why redshirt him?"
Because my story will not work otherwise…..but shuush please! ;-)
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
I don't understand the thinking here
Well, I understand it to a certain degree, and I would redshirt Spangler, Dranginis, and Sarbaugh, and maybe Pangos as well, but not GBJ.
You are saying we should do this so we can win a National Title. But you are acting as if no players are going to graduate and we are gonna get some ridiculous recruiting class in the next few years, which is possible I suppose, but not very likely. Rob and E will be gone soon and what big men do we have to replace them? Is Kelly a starter quality player? I haven’t seen it from him.
If Gary Bell is really that good an outside shooter, and my main man white water in the Monninghoff can get some time and be another shooter, than I would give us a chance to compete with any team if healthy.
Being honest, I would like Mark Few to recruit some hard nosed on ball defenders, not just offensive threats like he has been doing. Every recruit this year is known for their offensive abilities except maybe Sarbaugh, and I would say the jury is still out on whether he will get playing time at all. The only ones I can remember in the past few years were Gurganious(Which didn’t turn out too well), Meech(Who has such offensive deficiencies that it balances out his defensive abilities) and Erroll Knight(Who I believe was a transfer.)
Damn, what I wouldn’t give for a few Erroll Knights on the floor thursday night. Even that may not have made a difference.

Redshirts
A lot of talk about getting better on the defensive end, but I don’t recall feeling that BYU was tough on D at all. I think we just got behind and its tougher to shoot from behind than with the lead. We had so few pure shooters on this team that we couldn’t afford to have an off night. I really believe that we need shooters on the floor, make opponents work harder on the defensive end and play with the lead. This team just had to work so hard to score, and had so few options, It’s really amazing they went as far as they did. I don’t know how I feel about redshirting with this incoming class, would think that GB would need to play, maybe sit the rest unless KP just comes in and blows everyone away.
by Yakazag on Mar 22, 2011 10:39 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
I think we will redshirt the other 4, but if we redshirt Bell that would leave us very thin on shooters.
Carter shot good the final month of the year, but was nothing before. Hoff shot great the first month, and not much after. Harris, Dower, & Kelly are both better suited in the post. Stockton can make shots, but he still doesn’t seem 100% confident to fire when open. We need someone who can be a weapon with the jumpshot.
I have been going over and over Bell, and the need to at least replace Gray.
So who knows, maybe I just don’t want to open the presents til Christmas.
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
pangos and bell
both these guys will play. they will be our two best guards next year. why redshirt them?
But it's not like Gary and Pangos will be gone the next year either.
In fact, it would support winning a national championship to have these guys play their first year, if you want them to win a nat’l championship the next year, so they can get experience playing against the best players instead of sitting on the bench the whole year and practicing against our own guys.

Uhh...
Why would you slap Rob and E in the face by sending the message that 2011-12 will be a sacrificial season? I’d like to keep winning and fielding the best team possible.
I think that Hoff and Keita will see increased minutes next season, and I could see everybody but GBJ redshirting. I don’t think he’d “hold his horses” (I wouldn’t if I’d had an understanding that I’d get pt), and I don’t see any reason why he should.
I could see the others redshirting, but not GBJ.
I didn't want to slap BOTH Rob and E ina face....just Rob
He is tough enough to take it. Besides if he plays to his potential….no need for him to be a sacrificial lamb is there? He can take us all the way, kind of like a Wilt Chamberlain? lol
E can come back the year after. Rob can go pro.
One more thing…IF red shirting everyone would allow us to field the “best possible team” in two years….why can’t we be patient and wait one year? We all like winning but I would like a trophy.
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
This year's team (if you could pull off redshirting incoming classes)
If they would have adopted RS the entire freshman class a few years ago, he’s a possible rotation for this years team. Need to add RS in front of all of the eligability years.
1 – Goodson (Sp), Stockton (Fr)
2 – Bouldin (Sr), Carter (Jr)
3 – Gray (Jr), Harris (Fr), Arop (Fr)
4 – Daye (Jr), Harris (Fr), Olynk (Fr)
5 – Sacre (Jr), Dower (Fr).
Obviously its all pretend. No telling who we’d have picked up if Daye had stuck around, but what the heck.
Yeah But Players Have to Want to Redshirt
Can you really see Few going up to Daye or Harris or even Bouldin and Gray and saying “You want to sit out a year?” No way. Those guys I think came to Gonzaga because they wanted to play right away and they felt Gonzaga gave them the best opportunity to do so. If Few wanted to redshirt them, I guarantee you they would have not committed to Gonzaga in the first place.
Supporting the Giants, Niners, Sharks, Warriors, Golden Bears and Zags since 1987
Totally agree
Unless every college took the approach, the top players would not opt for a school that systematically redshirted. And if every college took the approach, you’d probably see more players heading off to Europe from HS.
Redshirting is a touch issue
You don’t see it as often as you do in college football because one of the big selling points in recruiting is “if you come play for us, you’ll play right away” and by redshirting them, you’re obviously not holding your end of the bargain as a coach.
That being said, redshirting hasn’t been an issue here at GU. If anything, incoming freshman at GU have been more apt to being redshirted than at most college programs. Of course, this has produced some mixed results. While some have obviously benefited from the extra year of seasoning and practice (i.e. Sam Dower), some seem to have their stock hurt by sitting an extra year, making way for incoming freshman (e.g. Andy Poling). Is redshirting a good thing? I think it can be, and for a lot of the freshman, redshirting wouldn’t be a bad idea since the Zags return A LOT of talent next season.
But then again, it’ll be interesting in Pangos an Bell’s case because they seem to have hype that hints that they can play right away (I think so in Bell, not so much in Pangos).
Supporting the Giants, Niners, Sharks, Warriors, Golden Bears and Zags since 1987
"big selling points in recruiting is "if you come..."
Sure, that makes sense. But, I am only talking about one time. One year. So in theory, we could still say if you come to Gonzaga, you will play right away. Plus, by doing this thing one year, if we win a trophy? Recruiting will be off the charts! Show em a National Title and they will come.
Another excellent point you made is the one about Poling redshirting and the potential for being recruited over. Damn, didn’t even think about that one. Hmmmmm.
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
Red shirt KO
Why not RS KO? If E comes back and I think he will then KO is the fourth option in the post. That is not enough mins for him. Let him RS and after next year he and Sam will be jr’s together and have two years to play and start together. So I say RS – KD,CS, KO and maybe KP unless he comes in and blows away Meech and DS. But I got a feeling GBJ will be playing point a lot next year.

Redshirts
I’m just so sick of teams packing the paint on us that I say play the guards who can extend defenses. If I were Mark Few, I would sit my guards down and tell them exactly what they need to do in the off season to see time on the floor next year. I can relate with the concept of stacking the future lineup to make a run, but ideally its the responsibility of the coaching staff to recruit big time players every year.
Additionally, if Gary Bell is as good as we think he is, he will be gone in 3 years, we do want him to be that good, RIGHT!
by Yakazag on Mar 23, 2011 7:58 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
OK...I am kinda seeing it could be like this:
1. Next season, use GBJ because he is the player most ready to contribute, and we can sure use a shooter to make up for Gray graduating. But then we have bickering about playing time, and disgruntled players transferring or getting “forced out”. Cannot see a Final 4 anytime soon that way.
2. Red shirt everyone but GBJ, and save their eligibility, we still might have potentially enough to get to the Final 4 in {2 or 3} years because of doing this.
3. Do it the way Dan Fitzgerald did. Win a trophy and start whipping the Dookies & NCs and Kansas for Elite recruits, get over the hump and contend every year babeeee!
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
Even if we win 3 championships in a row, I doubt we would be whipping Kansas and Duke and UNC for recruits.
We might get some away from Washington and UCLA and the Pac 10, but Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, they’re still gonna get there’s. And probably still to a higher degree than us. Look at Butler. They were in the Nat’l Championship last year, a few inches away from winning it, beating Duke. Did that help them get a great recruiting class? Maybe for their standards, but definitely not on a national level. The top level teams would probably have to have 4 straight losing seasons or 4 straight misses of the NCAA tournament to have Gonzaga and Butler taking away their precious 5 star recruits that they are probably promising and/or giving illegal gifts and so on to.
I think the fact that we recruit as well as we do now is a great sign, but I don’t see us getting those 5 star recruits like the big time BCS eastern teams do as long as we are in the WCC and playing in a 6000 seat arena. I love the Kennel, and I’ve never even been there, I’d never want to move to another arena, but in my opinion, the only way for us to come close to pulling those 5 stars away from the big boys is to move our home games to Spokane Arena and join the Pac 10 or 12 or whatever it is now, and subsequently dominate it for a few years like we have the WCC.

OK...lets do it
To start…get one title. Improved recruiting will happen. Sure one trophy will not enable us to match the pedigree of Duke & Kansas, but it’s a start.
If Fitz could go nuts, redshirt everyone and it did everything we know as what ZAG Nation is now…maybe one more helping of mass redshirting would get the titles in reach, we move to the Pac12, build a bigger stadium. All of your concerns can all be remedied.

so...
…You RS Bell, Pango’s, KD, RS…ok so the next year Harris is gone, Sacre is gone, MC is gone, Meech is gone…and the Front court is Dower, Olynk, and RS freshman Spangler to be teamed with a backcourt of who? 3 RS freshmen GBJ, Pango’s, KD…and undersized Junior DS…the Euro twins…sorry that is not a NC type team.
If you don't like my fire then don't come around...
Good thinking, but you've missed a couple of things...
Harris would be here one more year after Sacre. Which would give us a front court of Harris, Dower, KO, and Spangler. I like it.
You did not add in the freshmen wew will recruit that would replace the loss of Sacre, Meech, and Carter. Add three more high end recruits. Mix em in with the back court and/or front court.
After redshirting one year my hope is that Pangos and Bell would be ready to go. Most think they are ready now. Dranginis will be ready by then as well, plus Spangler as a back up big. Stocks will be bigger, stronger, better too.
Harris/KO
Dower/Spangler
Dranginis/Arop
Bell/ Hoff
Pangos/ Stockton
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
Harris...
stays not only his Junior Year but his Senior year as well….hmmmm ok….possible I guess…
You like this Front court of Harris, Dower, KO and Spangler…over Sacre, Harris, KO and Dower?
If I were to add in the 2012 Freshman then that would be…for the 2012 season…GBJ, Pangos, KD, Spangler, Sarbaugh + 3 more freshman…that is…ummm what 8 Freshman redshirt or otherwise? Yep that def screams final four to me. ;)
I would rather see:
2011: Sacre/ Dower
Harris / Olynyk
Hoff / Arop
GBJ / MC
Meech or DS / Pango…but if Stockton can get bigger then I am fine with RS of Pangos….
If you don't like my fire then don't come around...
and this looks like a final 4 team to you?
It looks for the most part we are splitting hairs about whether Sacre would be best served w/ the current supporting cast, add in a couple fresh next year, vs no Sacre add in redshirt players with more experience, toss in more freshman recruits.
This is all just speculation, opinion and the only thing I can add at this point is this: If he were alive, and he is not, I would LOVE for Fritz to debate whether red shirting all of these players would be beneficial or not. Wonder how many people freaked out when he did it the one time? It worked. It enabled us to get to this point…
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
maybe...
but IMO the difference is a 2011 line up that has a Senior PG (meech) , Senior SG (Carter), a Senior Center (Sacre), a two Junior PF’s coupled with A very talented Freshman in GBJ, and a MUCH better than ppl realize KP.
By mid year 2011-2012 season you could have a starting line up of:
Pangos, GBJ, Carter, Harris, Sacre. That is a hell-uva line up. And the bench would be sick as well…DOWER, MC, DOWER, Meech, DOWER, Stockton, DOWER, Olynk, Maybe even MM….did I say DOWER? :)
This would give us in 2012…two key players who have 1 year of D1 experience, two key players who have RS’d (KD and RS) and are D1 ready…to couple with Dower, Olynk…maybe Harris…and whoever may come in 2012…maybe Skylar Spencer…(crosses fingers)…to me THAT would be a very dangerous team as well.
If you don't like my fire then don't come around...
Ok this is how it should go:
GBJ plays next year, KD, RS, KP all redshirt. The following year GBJ fakes an injury, gets a medical red shirt. KD, RS, and KP all get a year of experience under their belt. Elias Harris goes on a 2 year “Mission” to Germany where he becomes the leading scorer on the German National team. Returns three years later to play with GBJ, KD, RS, and KP when they are Juniors. Somebody in a broadcast booth messes up and lists Sacre as a Freshman, and nobody notices, giving him 4 more years of eligibility and the chance to play in twice as many college games as any player ever has. Adam Morrison dyes his hair blonde and everyone mistakes him for Monninghoff, allowing him to play at least 3 more years.
Hell yeah.
THIS!!!!!!!!!!
Now, please write it up as a fanpost….it’s front page material!

I think it should be Micah Downs growing a head of hair and dying it blond.
Honestly, I don’t think anyone would notice, we could just say Hoff grew a few inches. Same number, same style of play, just a few inches between the two. Respect for Fitz
I have all the respect in the world for you for referencing Dan Fitzgerald. I am always explaining to people that this Gonzaga phenomenon did not start in 1999, but in 1989 with that class. That is why the Zags have been a stalwart on the national scene: a strong foundation was laid by Fitz and his careful use of scant resources. Nowadays, thought, we are seeing prima donnas like Steven Gray and Austin Daye come through the Gonzaga program. These kids were drawn by the fancy arena and the jet trips, they have no appreciation for the experiences of the pioneers of this program. I concur 100% that it is time to cut these recruits down to size: have them wait a year to acclimate to the program and to earn their spot on the active roster. Perhaps then we will see the Zags play with the grit and determination that we used to always see.
Ah, the good old days!
Remember when Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton couldn’t play as Freshmen? They literally were a forced “redshirt”. It would be interesting to see how recruits would handle not playing as Freshmen! I don’t think Austin would’ve come but Steven probably would’ve. I’m with gaz on this one too…………………sit’m all!
I was partially thinking about the member Jeehjee(sic?) when I wrote this fanpost...
And remembering what he tried to teach us. Make it interesting, try to be funny, use facts and stats. Good advice.
I was trying to be kinda funny, and use a catchy title…but I was also kinda serious. Hey, If Fitz got us to here, why not do a double dip and see what happens? Like a return to Gilligans Island, with results? haha
The one player I feel torn about it Bell though. If he could get us to the Elite 8 NEXT YEAR, then I say yes, go for it. If not? then I say redshirt him too. If anyone has a chrystal ball, now is the time to bust it out!
I presume we will work on BIGS in a hurry and get some blue chippers in, in time to complement our red shirt class and get us back to competing for a trophy. And hopefully before some other mid major takes the grand prize…I want it to be us first sooo bad. A nice cherry on top.
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
Thank you sir for your kind comments, Seriously wonder what % of fans even know about Fitz, may he RIP.
I heard about his recent unfortunate passing…I have read books, I have talked with fans who have more longevity with the program and they have schooled me about him, and what a great guy he was. So, even if I was not around to know about him, I know about him.
My concern when I wrote this article was that perhaps nobody would have a clue who, or what I was talking about…and from reading some of the comments it appears to be so. That’s OK, we can still pass along the word.
He REALLY DID do what I said he did and it is what got the foundation of such success laid at Gonzaga. Can you imagine a coach today having the fortitude to say the hell with everyone, we are going to do it MY WAY and red shirt everyone?…Thank God he did. I just wish people understood that HE is what got this lil engine that could, started.
