Zags on Track to Win Record 11th WCC Title

We really are...seriously.

Call me delusional, or say it's wishful thinking, BUT...

It is pretty simple and it might be by design. We have the Gaels right where we want them! All we have to do is win out and have St. Mary's slip up once. And taking a peek at the 6 conference games we have left, it looks very doable. Consider it gutsy, if you will, for the Zags to have purposely set this up just to inject some excitement into the same ol same ol repetition of winning the WCC Title, but it's not going to be as hard as one might think.

First, we have two road games vs Pepperdine 4-5,  and LMU 1-8, easy enough. Then we get Santa Clara and USF in the Kennel for some revenge smack-down. No problems there. A mop up vs woefulSan Diego 1-8. Finally, the game at St. Mary's will be the "coup de grace", and our curtain call as WCC Champs.

Hold on Gazzy, you said St. Mary's has to slip up. What about that?

THAT, is even easier, as if the top part wasn't easy enough. St. Mary's has lost 4 games on the road. Maybe it's because they miss their pillows, but they are very vulnerable on the road.Tomorrow they go on the road to face Santa Clara & the University of San Francisco. This is where they might very well slip up. SC is 6-2. USF is 5-3. Both have won 5 of their last 6 games, including wins over the Zags and Portland. Meanwhile, St. Mary's has struggled as of late squeaking by lowly LMU and Pepperdine, and getting absolutely throttled at Vanderbuilt and Portland. All this, after their miracle win vs the Zags on a last second off balanced shot.

There you have it. Add another W.C.C. Title to Gonzaga's trophy case. Although they have taken this precarious route, it probably was by design. I mean, we already have the major problem of our fans sleeping through the games at the Kennel. THIS was the only way to get these folks excited again!

So sit back, realize what is happening and enjoy the ride. The Zags have put a lot of effort into this scenario in order for it to unfold like this!

We showed the formula to beat SMC

go inside early and often. They don’t have good post play and they foul a lot. They got pretty lucky and beat us, but they got smashed by UP and have barely won a couple home games against bad teams. I think that they are extremely vulnerable if McConnell isn’t red hot. I think we’ll earn a share of the title, I just want it to be outright! However, in a year like this, I just wanna go to the NCAAs.

That's all really nice....

But.. seriously, it would be nice to keep the regular season title streak alive, but even if we win out there is NO way we get an at large bid. I’d be happier to win the WCC tourney and get a bid… that streak is much more important

We're gonna get that too

But I was saving that for another story. :-)

Wait a sec…are you SURE if we win out… win the WCC Conf, and fall just short in the WCC Tourney we cannot get an at large? At this point I think you are right but…..stranger things have happened.

Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~

Well...

No one can ever be completely SURE, but even with a win-out, St. Mary’s is our only quality win since conference play started, and we lost to them at home. We have no wins against ranked teams, lost to memphis, santa clara, USF, WSU, K-State (who was obviously much better when we played them, but pretty bad now)… and our only real quality wins as far as RPI and the voters go, we have Ok St and Xavier, neither of which have been ranked all season. Not to mention the loss against Illinois who is also no longer ranked…. It get’s pretty hard to justify an at large bid. If we wouldn’t have had the losses to USF and Santa Clara…and Memphis… maybe.

I agree but we still can get hot down the stretch hopefully...

Everything you state is pretty accurate but we did beat Baylor in Dallas while they were ranked #9. They are not ranked any longer as they have fallen off too. I tend to agree even if we win out, we need to win the conference tourney in Vegas to get in the NCAA’s this year or we’re looking at the NIT or worse the CBI if we slipp up bad and lose like 3-4 more games. I hope we can turn things around quickly and go on a serious run, get hot as a team and take out St. Mary’s in the title game and ride high into the Dance!!! All IMO, and as everyone knows we can only go so far if we have some kind of set rotation-big question mark is Meech and how much he should be playing. My personal favorite combo right now is when Sam Dower and Rob Sacre are on the floor together. They feed off each other really well and pass the ball tremendously from the low or high post. This isn’t a knock on Elias, I still enjoy his play but he’s been struggling this year to find any consistency but I will give him a pass due to his early injury problems that I believe have plagued him all season. All in all I still have hope and believe we will be victorious in Vegas!! Go Zags!!

Backs to the wall

In essence, every game is going to be a very big game for the rest of the season. We are behind the 8 ball and we can only control the things we can control.

I think hoping that St. Mary’s will slip up is very wishful thinking.

Better to focus on improving the team and hope this bunch peaks at the WCC tournament.

After watching the Memphis game, I must confess I don’t understand what is going on any more. I’ll just leave it at that.

"hoping that St. Mary’s will slip up is very wishful thinking"

Perhaps. But if they do, it will not have been.

And you can better believe I will be wishing for an upset tonight.

WCC tourney

For all of the ups and downs and uncertainty this year, one thing’s for sure: the tournament will be the most exciting in years. And don’t forget the lady Zags – what a great season and a solid bet to win the WCC championship. Can hardly wait.

any hopes

if we are to make the tourney it has to be in vegas. guys must get hot and few needs to play the hot hands. that means a lot less time for meech and giving stockton the reins. i refuse to call him baby stockton. dower needs to get more time bc has increased his physicality down low and is a nightmare for a big man to come out and defend against his ability to hit the three. id also like to see manny get more than 10 mins a game but being that im from long island and dont see every game maybe he is in the dog house for a reason. lastly, did keita mess up bad bc he gets no mins. at the beginning of the year i was really impressed by his defense and hustle.

My Mother read this story...

She asked me if I REALLY thought we had a chance of this happening.

My answer: “Of course not.” I was looking at the possibilities with rose colored glasses while drinking Zag Kool Aid.

If we mess up one more time the whole thing falls into the abyss.

C’mon Zags, lets get this party started!!~
