Ehlo may play up the Texas folksiness, and sometimes reaches for vocabulary not in his wheelhouse – but he definitely is far from being the worst “local” announcer I’ve heard.

If you were forced to take a shot every time he said something that was incoherent, nonsensical, or just generally moronic
you would be blind drunk by halftime. This isn’t a case of Texas folksiness or overly ambitious vocabulary; this is a case of someone being so grossly incompetent at his job as to be an ongoing disgrace to the university.
I’ll cut Heister some slack as being tolerably mediocre, though.

Heister knew more about basketball, and less about tennis.

They get paid
to talk about basketball. So how come 50% of the time during the game, THEY AREN’T TALKING ABOUT BASKETBALL???
I’ve also watched a half dozen games or so with them announcing and Ehlo has made several clearly racist remarks. I doubt that they were intentional but people in general should be aware of what they are saying and how it will be construed, especially a TV announcer!
Also, agree.
Give the guy a break. If he shouldn’t be announcing games, complain to the guy that pays him.

He’s had an NBA career and has a pretty widely recognized name. I can’t fault KHQ/Gonzaga/whoever for giving him a shot. What bugs me is that everytime I watch and listen, I learn nothing about the opposing team and there are really no originial insights coming from either Ehlo or Heister. It is often just a broadcast filled with meaningless ramblings.
They obviously don’t do research or prepare besides looking at who is the leading scorer for the opponent and, if they do, they have no idea how to translate that to the actual game with complete sentences.
Being a homer is one thing but I just can’t stand broadcasts where there is really no meaingful insight.

Correct. They mail it in every game.
Seem to do no preparation. They show up, are handed rosters, and we’re just supposed to be fat, dumb and happy because “hey at least we get to see the games on TV!”? This is just like the argument saying that stats are boring and that trying to better understand the game we love is stupid.
If your job is to announce Gonzaga games,
…and you are terrible at your job, like Heister and Ehlo are, then they deserve ridicule. We aren’t talking about students here, these are people who GET PAID to do this. I don’t think it’s too much to ask to have competent people as broadcasters.

I think we overblow how bad they are, I am too into games to care much…I really hated them both at first, especially Heister, but I think I am used to them.
For the people who say they seem to put in very little prep time, and mail it in, yeah, I agree… You can be “folksy”, and articulate, and give valuable insights…
All that, I still love watching the games, and there are quite a few things more annoying to me than them.
What about Santangilo?

Last night he started talking about county fairs and how farmers probably use steroids to grow their huge pumpkins and then continued how they probably used steroids to carry their huge pumpkins.
I agree that Ehlo/Heister do little or no preparation for the games they announce.
Either that or they are unable to communicate the information they have prepared.
I really like Ehlo personally.
We have a basketball team that puts in a lot of work in preparation for every game. Wish our announcers would do the same.

I agree with you, though. I hate when the games are on FSN because I have to listen to these two guys be absolutely terrible at their jobs.

heister not to bad by himself
when heister works with someone from ESPN like hes has a couple times hes not to bad (other than being kind of a homer) but when you put these 2 together it gets worse and alot of the times the game seems to be a blowout so usually the 2nd half is just pointless babbaling

Ehlo and Heister suck
they may be good guys in person, but they suck horribly at their jobs and should not get paid.
For being homers I think they try to talk up the other teams too much. If we get behind a bad team, they start to rationalize it when they should show disappointment in our play.

I can't count how many times I have watched the Zags on TV and...
was’nt even able to find out who fouled who or anything pertaining to the game at hand.
Heister and Ehlo would be great on The Beverly Hillbillies but THEY SURE SUCK AS BASKETBALL ANNOUNCERS!!!!
Maybe they could announce BYU games. I can already hear “Ehlo’s Bullshit Wisdom” about the Davies situation at BYU…it would be classic…and they would tar and feather him and ship him out of Utah in a rail car!
But no luck…we’re stuck with him!
Ehlos Legacy to me will not be how he was as a player but how he has been allow to spew his stupid wisdom at televised Zag games…

Print it, I’d buy it! I can’t stand the 2 as an announcing pair and last year made it a point to email KHQ about the pair after every game. If they don’t know that people would rather stick their tongues on a 9 volt battery than listen to them they won’t do anything about it.

I actually can tolerate Ehlo. Sometimes one enjoys a homer broadcast. When I turn on FSNNW I don’t need Clark Kellogg and Jim Nantz. Besides, who is a good basketball announcer? Vitale. “Are you kidding me” “Diaper Dandy” He’s a PT Player" Pure noise. We like him because we love his passion. Bob Knight. Let me get a notebook so I can take notes and a nodoze pill to stay awake.
I can actually ignore Ehlo’s nonstop gaffs, for the 2 or 3 good points that he makes. We can’t forget all his accomplishments. He’s been there. He actually makes some good points, you just have to catch them when he throws them out. I compare him to Brooks Robinson, who used to broadcast Orioles games. His voice was brutal, but he invariably knew exactly what was going to happen, just like he had a 6th sense when he played. I always thought he would have been a good manager. I get that from Ehlo on occasion.

I don’t know how, but Harry could say off the wall things and stay beloved by everyone – Ehlo not so much so. Maybe he should get lit like Harry used to! (should have heard him at the end of a double header!)

This year I paid for the college basketball package with comcast – have you heard the commentating from the Big 10 or other networks? What a bore! Like listening to PBR! (No Ehlo, that’s Public Broadcast Radio, not Pabst Blue Ribbon!) With Ehlo’s experience, I would like to hear more basketball insight and less country bumpkin speak, but at least he stirs a reaction.

Ehlo & Heister- They have actually grown on me this season, especially the later it gets. Kind of like a rash. LIke the measles, or say….Poison Ivy!!
It has become unbearable and something needs to be done about it. I hoped that maybe some experience and confindence gained from it would help but it has not. They are a DISASTER as sports broadcasters.

The best thing about Gonzaga being on tv...
is that if WSU is on tv as well, we will not have to listen to Ehlo for our game. I’m a Coug, but watch most GU games (actually root for them as well), but I do not claim Ehlo! He is horrible, I blame him for my drinking.
Are Heister & Ehlo the best talking heads that we can come up with to broadcast our games?
Just had a thought. Just maybe we will be spared, by default, if BYU Channel broadcasts Zag games next year. Could we be so lucky?
Yes, I’m still carrying on about these two.
They leave a residual bad taste on us out of state Zag die hards who all get together to watch EVERY Gonzaga basketball game. We are all thrilled when the games are carried on any other source than FSN or when we can attend the Zag games in person. A quality program like the Zags should, at the very least, have quality media announcing our games.
TSSF had a similar blog entry last year whereby we voiced our dissatisfaction about these two Yeahoos…but to no avail. Does’nt anyone care except us bloggers? And what is with FSN? Is this a way of punishing us or simply apathy on their part?
STILL Perplexed and Frustrated!
