The regular season streak or the tourney?
Like most of the members of this site, I was pretty depressed about this team for a long time. Preseason, I told friends from other schools that this was our final four year... that we had the perfect mix of experience, young talent, depth, and defense (ha!). As we collapsed, I found myself more upset about our 10 season regular season streak ending than I was about potentially missing the NCAA tournament. This was Gonzaga's chance to make history and supplant John Wooden's UCLA and we managed to screw it up.
Now that we have a chance (just a small one. No way I'm jinxing this thing) to win/share the regular season title, I asked myself which I would rather have: a win against USD and a chance to keep the streak going, or an automatic bid to the tournament. Obviously, there is a chance (even smaller, almost nonexistent, it basically can't happen) that we can do both of these things, but I'm curious: how do you guys feel about this?
Continue the streak or get to the tourney?

Tourney
My dislike (read: near hatred) for SMC does not top my joy of putting the Zags too far in my Bracket each March.

Wooden had 13
We would need to win this year, and then 3 more years to supplant wooden.
streak
we aren’t doing much in the tourney this year. Not with David Stockton playing 28 minutes and Mike Hart as a defensive specialist!
Wooden's record
Right, we have to win 3 more seasons in a row, but this gives us sole possession of second and a decent shot at making it to 14. I guess I like the idea of Gonzaga being in the record books more than I like our chances at making noise in the tournament this year.

Shaq: yo man, can I score some dope?

Sorry, disagree with your assessment that...
the chance of getting BOTH an auto bid in the dance and WCC Title is “almost nonexistant”.
We beat San Diego, we win the Vegas Tourney…it’s a done deal. Pretty straight forward and not only possible, but highly probable.
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
Haha I was trying to avoid the jinx...
maybe it’s just me, I try not to take things for granted on record because I hate eating my words. I feel like we’ll get ’em both too, but the sports Gods must be appeased.

I want both!
However, if I could only have one, I think I’d prefer to keep the streak alive. I don’t think we have the ability to make a big run in the tounament this year….unfortunately.
Our chances for both are highly possible!
Our chances to play and win in the tourney are also good. This team is starting to figure it out.
Winning the WCC Conf Title is FAR MORE important
than getting into the Dance.
The dance has already expanded to include the First Four, a by-product of the new 68 team format.
There was a stropn push to get 96 teams in and it almost happened. Oh, I am sure it will happen, and expansion will keep happening until it is not profitable for sponsers to do so.
This is why I feel the WCC Title is more important. The NCAA Tourney is/will become something so watered down that practically everyone will get into. Hence, big deal!
But a Division Title? On pace to catch UCLA? Let’s do it!
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
Why stop there?
I recently read an article where the writer was saying ALL teams in D1 should be in it. As long as corporate America can make money, it will keep expanding.
Any “streak” getting to the Dance will be worthless. Sad, sad, sad.
Its gonna be gLoRiOUS!!~
It already is...
it’s called the season. The watering down of the tourney is not good for the sport (except money wise) This is what makes the regular season so fun to watch, every game matters. How about the drama of the conference tourneys? Lost if they keep expanding. Stop the Maddness and stop expanding!
11 year streak
is what will be remembered. Going to the tourney is more important for recruiting and just generally running the program at a high level. But still, looking back 25 years from now, league championship streak is the graphic that will pop up during broadcasts when other teams near 10 years in a row.
About the only thing that would come close (or better) is the record for consecutive years IN the tourney.
